Will DCPS be closed on Tuesday?

Anonymous
It should be closed tomorrow and probably Wednesday too. Ive lived in DC for 30 years, and this was a unique storm in that what started as fluffy lovely snow quickly turned to frozen, packed ice with a forecast that will not melt the snow significantly for another week. Most vehicles aren't dug out of their icy tombs, sidewalks are a mess. I live on a wide state street and I haven't seen a snow plow all day. The city needs to help with the ice pack sidewalks. It's too much for regular snow shovels. Residents and school custodial staff can't do it all. My high schooler will not being going tomorrow if school is in session.

NBC4 weather guy said he didn’t think any district in the dc area would be able to open this week.

Oh ffs. But I guess post-Covid this is the new reality about how much people care about schools. meanwhile my kid is walking to school today to meet friends to sled.

It is amusing that my kids walked to their elementary school yesterday and today to sled ... but somehow they can't walk to school for class tomorrow?

I get that DC doesn't have the same infrastructure as more northern states, but it always feels like school closures/delays are more vibes than any concrete decision-making.

Are you signing up to sub in their classrooms tomorrow? Most teachers do not live within walking distance of the school. I do not, and my street has not been plowed yet. When it does get plowed, I anticipate a wall of snow/ice at the end of my driveway. I will not be in to work tomorrow.

Yes, that would be an excellent point if all students and staff lived within walking distance from the school.

This was a quite unusual storm with now record breaking cold.

I am not DCPS staff. I thought it was way out of bounds to tell staff that they were to wfh today (for records day). Sorry, but teachers are people too who have to clear snow, provide childcare, feed children, etc.

All the major streets have been plowed in the last 4 hours. You can track plows and plow coverage here: https://citizeninsights.geotab.com/#/dcsnowgov

They like to wait and see what OPM does. They do not always follow OPM, but its a useful data point. OPM decisions impact a lot of people in this area. OPM has not announced anything yet.

I work at another school (not the one they attend), so no

I'm not disagreeing about the staff question. But a lot of the comments on this thread are focused on how it's not possible for kids to walk, when that's not the main issue – as evidenced by the many kids near me walking to their schools right now to hang out.

Do teachers have to work a set number of contract days? So, if they don't wfh today, they'd have to add a day later in the year or take a day from an upcoming break?

OPM is no longer a reliable touchpoint since it's under the most incompetent, cruel, and out of touch administration ever. I'm sure FED-hating Trump would love for hundreds of Feds to die in car accidents after declaring that work is on time.

You can drive to the subway in the snow. It's not that big of deal.

The city of Buffalo owns 36 snow plows. Buffalo gets an average of 90 inches of snow each year.

DC gets an average of 14 inches of snow each year. It owns *368* snowplows.

What. Dont feds have max telework today. Why DCPS absolutely should make teachers zoom on a records day.

They need to close tomorrow and possibly a delay Wednesday. The ice is very dangerous, and with all neighboring schools being closed, many teachers will have to call out as well to watch their children.

This is a BS/misleading statistic and you know it

Unfortunately, DCPS can’t wait until we get above freezing to re-open.
