Will DCPS be closed on Tuesday?

Closed. Delays are useless because no melting is happening.

Do you need an announcement to know roads aren’t passable? Look out the windows.

I don’t think DCPS ever sent out a blast like they normally did for today (Monday) since it was a records day. They finally posted on social media around 8pm that teachers/staff/central office were moving to a virtual day for anyone who was supposed to be in-person. I don’t know if they communicated that with them prior to posting but seems really late to make the call all things considered.

Yes they will be closed Tuesday.

DCPS had a teacher workday today, so no closure necessary.

I feel like that has changed a bit recently (like post COVID). If they can’t properly staff schools (bc other districts are closed) it is hard to open them.

Yes, agreed. I’ve had kids in DCPS since 2010, and they have definitely gotten more conservative about weather. They still tend to open more than the surrounding districts, so like others I think they will be closed Tuesday and late the rest of the week. But I wouldn’t be surprised if they were closed Wednesday, too.

Without a fleet of busses, DCs decision is different than the counties where kids might be waiting in the road at bus stops because of plowed snow drifts. Still need to consider that teachers may lack childcare if they live where schools are closed and weigh that against a FARMS population that benefits from school meals. No idea what the decision will be but it’s different

NP and this is why I wouldn’t be surprised at all if they were open tomorrow

A lot of the kids who benefit from school meals etc don’t come on bad weather, cold, ice, snow days.

We live across the street from a DCPS elementary reasonably close to center city. As of this morning, none of the roads around us are plowed. Closest plowed street is three blocks from the school. There is a bus line that runs past the school, it is obviously not running. School is not accessible via metro (closest stop about a mile away).

I'll watch throughout the day, but given the temps, I'd be a little surprised if schools were open tomorrow.

Yes! As a teacher, this is what the decision makers are missing. It was shown time and time again during early covid with the meal school locations. I 100% appreciate the fact that DCPS considers these kids and their needs, but unfortunatly these are also the students unable to get to school in these conditions. My street has not been plowed at all, if they open school tomorrow I will be unable to get there without significant change today, which I do not see happening.

I think closed tomorrow but open on Wednesday. More time to plow/salt roads. But it may not get above freezing all week.

Custodians still have to go in today. And no, it was not officially communicated to all DCPS staff before yesterday- some individual principals informed their staff earlier but not all. Many PD sessions were supposed to be held in person today.

FYI, a mile walk is metro accessible. But given that people in suburbs or even off arterials in DC won’t be able to drive, I think schools will be closed tomorrow.

A mile walk on unplowed sidewalks by elemenrary school students should not be considered accessible
