NBC4 weather guy said he didn’t think any district in the dc area would be able to open this week.

Oh ffs. But I guess post-Covid this is the new reality about how much people care about schools. meanwhile my kid is walking to school today to meet friends to sled.

It is amusing that my kids walked to their elementary school yesterday and today to sled ... but somehow they can't walk to school for class tomorrow?

I get that DC doesn't have the same infrastructure as more northern states, but it always feels like school closures/delays are more vibes than any concrete decision-making.

Are you signing up to sub in their classrooms tomorrow? Most teachers do not live within walking distance of the school. I do not, and my street has not been plowed yet. When it does get plowed, I anticipate a wall of snow/ice at the end of my driveway. I will not be in to work tomorrow.

You can drive to the subway in the snow. It's not that big of deal.

The city of Buffalo owns 36 snow plows. Buffalo gets an average of 90 inches of snow each year.

DC gets an average of 14 inches of snow each year. It owns *368* snowplows.

This is a BS/misleading statistic and you know it

How so? DC has pretty incredible resources for dealing with the snow, even compared to cities like Buffalo and Cleveland that, you know, get real snow.

What? Nobody's else jobs stop because of snow. Most of us with jobs are working today while doing all of those things.

News flash; every working adult has the same issue.

Schools are closed throughout the Northeast - Maryland, Virginia, Delaware, Pennsylvania - etc.

Do all those states lack the resources and capabilities to remove snow or maybe this was just tough and messy storm due to the ice and now frigid temperatures?

For the record, I lived in Boston, and schools closed due to weather every year.

Yep, PG will be closed through Thursday. A huge percentage of my school's teachers live in PG County and will be calling out.

Boston got 19 inches of snow in the past 24 hours. DC got 6 inches.

Which is ok. Can’t wait to see them close cause there’s no staff

Yes - without the ice, we would have had similar snow totals. Boston schools are closed today and tomorrow.

I just did a two mile walk and plenty of major roads are slushy icy mess. In one hour I saw four cars spinning out trying to make turns. In Columbia heights area, 11th doesn’t even looked plowed, 13th was a mess and parts of 14th. All the side east west streets in the don’t seem to have been plowed at all or it’s been over 24 hours.

Side streets have not been plowed. Children cannot walk on ice. Teachers live in DC but also surrounding areas and cannot dig out. Important to be fair and considerate to everyone. Give early notice and allow for peace of mind and planning. Good Decisions should consider the GOOD for ALL! PG County got it right with a Thursday return for students and teachers

I'm a teacher, live in Glover Park on a deep back street about as far from Wisconsin Ave that you can get in this neighborhood. My street has not been touched. I have a bad back and dread walking over the sheets of ice. I teach in Columbia Heights and have heard it's wretched there too. UGH.

This. My spouse and I both had to work today, though thankfully from home. We each took a half day of leave so that we could also parent, shovel, and in my case, sleep because I'm sick.

I think it's reasonable to close tomorrow due to the ice, particularly because temps tonight are supposed to be very low with a guaranteed re-freeze of anything that thawed/melted in the sun today. The ice is already very treacherous and many side roads remain unplowed, and many sidewalks still unshoveled. From a safety perspective, it seem reasonable to close tomorrow (especially with the gift of not having had to take a snow day today) to give the city, families, and teachers a chance to dig out and get roads and sidewalks clear by Wednesday.

Declaring today that schools won't be open all week is absurd, though. Take it day by day.
