Option H is permanent and the old Wootton HS campus will be closed for good?

I don't think they are.

Some posters on this form were surprised that the petition ( https://www.change.org/p/save-wootton-and-crown-high-school-say-no-to-option-h-and-modified-h ) got more than a 1000 signers. It looks like it's close to 2000 now.

It's always been the case but the posts/opinions of some on this board is not a reflection of the actual population out there.

I think there are a good amount of parents that basically just heard “new building” and decided that’s what they want without looking at any of the other information. They are not thinking long term, they are not thinking of the boundary changes just “ohhh a shiny new building” and that’s that.

And it’s okay if Wootton parents don’t support Option H but then they must also accept the realization that a renovation of Wootton won’t be taking place in the next 10-12 years. Wootton isn’t even on the CIP list. Finances for MCPS and the county are getting worse not better.

I’m not blaming Wootton parents but just saying, if they decline or fight against a brand new school offered to them in Option H, it’s not realistic to think a brand new Wootton is going to be built in its current location in next decade.

I suppose there are probably also differing opinions on the importance of the Wootton building's condition. Some parents and students may be more concerned about it than others, who value proximity more.

Does anyone have a sense of the views of Wootton teachers? They are who is affected long-term, unlike students who are only there 4 years.

My understanding is that they are 100% for it. Probably because of the reasons you just cited. This is their job. So they get a nicer looking place to work for the foresee able future. Probably few of them live within the Wootton zone anyway so I would doubt that matters to them.

Why is this plan crazy? It makes perfect sense to me.

Declining enrollment + huge budget shortfalls for the foreseeable feature + brand new school a couple of miles away = logical choice

Wootton was on the CIP for repairs multiple times then taken off for some other schools. That means other schools can be bumped off the CIP and Wootton added.

Because it leaves Gaithersburg HS and Notrhtwest with more than 2,400 students each.

How likely is this option to happen?

Would that be likely to happen after the community successfully advocated against a new building?

Possibly but facilities also has created a new more functional way of evaluating all schools. Ideally that is what is used in adding kids to the schools unless something greatly goes wrong. And Wooten is not the only place that needs replacement/repair.

If I'm the BOE or Superintendent I certainly wouldn't prioritize them.

2,400 students is not unusual for comprehensive high schools in the area. RM has almost 2400, same with BCC and Churchill has over 2,200. Even if they move some students out of GHS and Northwest, who is going to fill all the rest of the empty seats at Crown? Surely they didn't build the school for 1,000 kids.

No, Northwest is at 2121. And there's a note: Gaithersburg HS has available shell space for future buildouts

Why didn't Potomac buy and donate a place they preferred to build a school? Since most of the Wootton families are in Potomac. Seems like that would have been the most prudent course.

Most of Wootton families are in Rockville and Gaithersburg. The small
portion of Wootton on Falls road in 20854 are part of Rockville. I live in Rockville, 20854. I pay Rockville city taxes and get Rockville city services. The only Potomac elementary school at Wootton is Cold Springs .
