CogAT this year for 2nd grade

Anonymous
PP: this is good information to have. In 1st grade you definitely see a difference between kids who are 6 months or so apart - and my DC is one of the younger ones in his class.

I'm glad you found it helpful! (When I tried to point this out earlier in the thread, another poster kindly told me to "shut my hole" because I don't personally know every student and parent in FCPS so I couldn't possibly know what I'm talking about. Sigh . . . .)

ok, in an attempt o bring this thread back to a meaningful and informative exchange.....we purchased a study aid for the nnat and cogat this year. our DD is in 2d grade at a FFX ES. We were not laboring under the misimpression that we were really prepping her for the test or cramming her little head full of knowledge. I simply wanted her to have some familiarity with the structure of the test, take the time to listen to the questions, etc.....think PSAT.... We spent a few evenings doing questions with me spending more time explaining to her not to rush to answer and how to approach solving the harder questions.

She reported back that the nnat a few wks ago was very easy. "daddy, the questions were much easier than the ones you read me."

Yesterday I ask her how 1st day of cogat went and she starts balling....daddy i got them all wrong. they were so hard. i didnt know any of the words.....i had never even heard most of the words the teacher read.....very strange. we used the same primary level 2 cogat sample test questions as the nnat. the nnat Qs were supposedly easy.....and I think based on what DD told me, the she had the cogat verbal yesterday, the Qs were very very hard....While I do not think my DD is necessarily AAP material, her verbal abilities and reading comprehension are very strong and she is not surpisingly in the hightest reading group, so it really surprises me that cogat verbal MAY have been that hard.

Has anyone else gotten any feedback from their kids on the nnat a few wks ago or the cogat this week? I am almost afraid to ask how today's test went....

does anyone know if they are using the primary edition level 2 or multilevel A for grade 2?

thanks

^ she may have done better than she thinks. You did what you could. Don't blame you at all for trying. If she's anywhere in the ballpark scorewise, the GBRS will decide.

OMG. More proof that civilized discussion isn't possible on DCUM. Do you speak to people that way IRL?

Does one need to know every child and parent in FCPS in order to contribute to the conversation? Do you?

I don't know why I'm bothering to answer your question, but maybe someone else is wondering. The age-based scaled scores are printed right on the score sheet, and those are the numbers they use for screening. But you go right ahead believing your observation that kids who are held back from starting school on time have a testing advantage because of their age. Not going to argue with you about it.

Is the GBRS based on age-based scale too?

Is the work submitted by the teacher graded on an age-based scale too?

Is the teacher recommendation based on an age-based scale too?

Shut your pie hole!

Do you think her reaction might have been more geared to the fact she was afraid to disappoint you? I point this out as it is pretty evident the test is important to you and I'm sure your daughter has picked up on this. If she's getting this stressed over a test in 2nd grade I hate to think what it's going to be like for her when she gets older.

Clearly the OP is delusional in how he played down the fact that he was serious about prepping his DD when right afterwards, he outlined all the things that he did to prep her and the followup after the test and the multiple questions about the different levels.

BTW, that's "bawling," not "balling," unless DD responded to the father's question by running outside and playing basketball.

LMFAO!

maybe the kid's just not that bright. it happens. Not the end of the world. She can test next year. the OP has a whole year to prep her.

Isn't it interesting that, as a parent, you are never allowed to see the Cogat test or your child's answers.

You are told that the Cogat test is mistake-proof.

If you question the results, you are ridiculed as being a "helicopter mom" who thinks her child is smarter than he/she really is.

That one test, administered in second grade in many schools, determines what programs your child can be in through the twelfth grade.

Most gifted program advisors say they look at many factors, but at most schools, it actually doesn't matter how your child performs on any other test or in class.
The Cogat administrators claim that they can't show the test, or your child's answers, to anyone, because it would compromise the test. (They say that familiarity with the test could help other children get correct answers.) Yet if you google 'Cogat', the first thing that pops-up are sample tests and practice questions. The real reason they won't be transparent is that they want NO OVERSIGHT.

13:19 - It's standard protocol to not release IQ and achievement test questions, and if you are looking at FCPS - then you need to re-read the AAP info. The Cogat is just one of several factors they look at for each child. The program only goes through eighth grade not senior year. Furthermore, there is an appeals process for denials and teachers can request in future years that the child be re-tested.
