To the "Good Grief" poster.. Of course, I want to prep him, don't we all? Isn't that why we read and post to these forums? or do we just post here to kill time? .

OP

I just gave DC a pep-talk on the way to the bus stop. DC got in! No appeal needed of course.

Did you pay more money for a fast track response?

I wonder why some parents pay GMU to have them administer the test to their kids.

Because they don't get the scores they want from the CogAt and NNAT. These are "flawed" tests and may not reflect the true giftedness of some kids.

so the answer must be they missed the test administration at the scool for some reason?

No, GMU also administers the CogAT and NNAT.

GMU administers it earlier than FFX.

I think people are confusing many things. If your kid is not enrolled in FCPS in second grade, they can take a group CogAT and NNAT at GMU. This is NOT free.

If you want to appeal a denial of Level IV GT services, one can choose to have a private psychologist administer a test like the WISC IV. GMU offers this service (for a fee), but any licensed psychologist in the state of VA can do this (for a fee).

And the reason people do this is because tests like the CogAT and NNAT try to approximate the WISC, not the other way around.

We'll be having our child take these tests at GMU because we were in Fairfax County, moved out of the area, and will be moving back in -- but she missed the chance to be tested at the same time as her former/future peers.

I'm sure there are many reasons why people have their kids test at GMU. I for one am just glad there is an option.

Well, if your child wasn't tested in Fairfax County, they WILL get him/her tested. There is no need to do the CogAT or NNAT at GMU in that case.

Well, they would eventually test the child during the next testing cycle, but it may be for 4th grade placement rather than 3rd grade placement. I think they are hoping to see if the child qualifies without the delays normally associated with moving into the county after the testing has occurred.

Bingo. If she qualifies, we'd like her to be able to start 3rd grade in the program instead of having to switch later. If she doesn't qualify, no big deal -- but we'd like to know in advance.

Has anyone heard of cases where a kid gets into the pool due to test scores, but is not admitted into AAP?

Yes. It happens.

Yes. Parents refer their kids and kids get in to AAP. Also, parents appeal and kids get in.

Based on what reason?

newbie, eh? don't worry someone will be along soon to explain this.

What's with all the hypotheticals? Go read the AAP site. Of course kids not in the pool make it in and vice versa. Otherwise, the entire process would end at the pool.
