Real Concern: Does Hazing still happen in the Greek system?

Anonymous
Just had dinner with a friend. Her kid rushed last year and shared some things. Sounded similar to my day. One thing he shared was 8 pledges locked in a shed with four cases of beer and a bucket and couldn’t leave until gone. We drank way too much in our day too with activities. That’s the big part I don’t like, I had hoped the healthier lifestyle many kids have embraced would have changed this.

Not that something couldn't happen, but it's not a major issue. My son just joined a fraternity and has had no issues. Just a nice social group. There have been some sporadic issues with fraternities in the past, but those fraternities have been removed from campus if the issue is significant.

Not one of the 10 main social sororities, which I should have specified.

I’ve done my best to limit SEC apps but it can really happen anywhere. Handles of JD taped into one’s hand is the most frightening thing.

You actually think hazing only happens within the SEC?

Here is W&Ms hazing reports. The college pays attention and there are sanctions when it happens.

So do you only trust people you’ve seen naked? This makes no sense and is far from normal. The pilot doesn’t come out of the cockpit nude and yet you still trust them to fly your plane. In fact, I’d wager you wouldn’t trust a pilot who did this.

What? We didn't have anything like that when I was pledging.

Yes, there are sporadic issues. Fraternities are removed from campus for major infractions. The college pays attention.

W&M has had plenty of hazing incidents, as cited in the above posts.

Sororities never pressure candidates to have sex with actives/candidates from favored fraternities?

No

Depends; varies by sorority, university, etc. and as a PP said: this is all private and kept very secret. Sisters are coached and sworn to secrecy.

A little Harvey Weinstein-ish, no? Get naked and I’ll let you participate. Creepy

I can't imagine what would be worth this sort of humiliation. I went to a university that banned fraternities and sororities. I can't imagine putting up with that kind of treatment.

I have heard of hazing like that in off campus sororities. One of my friends in the 80s had some weird hazing initiation with hers. No nakedness in my sorority initiation or any of my friends in the Panhellenic sanctioned sororities.

Does the hazing continue all four years?
