Its not a great sign when they don't release the list of participating teams on schedule, OR the brackets on schedule. Almost always means multiple if not all age groups do not have enough teams.

+1, especially for a brand new tournament.

I’m not feeling hopeful at this point. I wonder if they’ll admit defeat and refund fees or if they’ll force us to play in a tournament with combined age groups and just have one bracket for each division.

They are charging each player over $500 in team fees for our team to play in 4 local tournaments all year, one being their own fundraiser tournament and one being whatever this is. I am honestly baffled as to where the fees are going but if this is a hot mess, they need to refund 25% of our fee or put us in a 5th event.

I like to give people the benefit of the doubt, but why would you put your whole club's teams into a brand new, unknown tournament when there are multiple reputable local tournaments going on the same weekend?

Several days late on your own deadlines means you are trying to scrounge up teams.

Seems to me like someone is trying to line their own pockets at the expense of the players and their parents. I’m getting increasingly disgusted with youth soccer and the number of money hungry people it seems to attract. How do greedy and corrupt people end up in charge of these clubs? And why don’t parents demand better? There seems to be a huge lack of oversight and transparency with how funds are spent at these clubs.

Sadly I think it is greed. I’ve never seen anything like this Herndon/tournament situation. There’s something seriously wrong and I wish someone at the club would explain themselves. Herndon has to be financially benefiting from this arrangement. My guess is that all Herndon teams were entered for free so the club gets to keep those tournament fees from parents. Normally when we have a bad experience we just move on the next year and learn from the experience. But for older kids like mine who are in the midst of college recruitment, this is a huge problem.

Logically, you can't put that many teams in a tournament for free. You have to pay for fields and referees. Someone might be getting a kickback somewhere though.

This has been the Herndon way for years. I was a team manager for years at Herndon and before they consolidated the payment structure, Herndon teams did not pay the entry fee for Dulles National. The tournament made money off of external teams. Dulles National used to be huge. Then the tournament director ran it into the ground and then Herndon consolidated everything and payments go directly to the club and all of a sudden, everything cost more and Dulles National and this Villareal tournament are included in the 4 tournaments a year.

There's one person at Herndon who has been profiting heavily off of stuff like this for years...
