Why not? We have high incomes and could go anywhere but frequently go there for thr direct flights, short distance from airport to residence, etc

DP. Are you aware the DR has had a U.S. State Dept. Level 2 Travel Advisory since last June?

Reissued after periodic review without changes.

Exercise increased caution in the Dominican Republic due to crime.

Country Summary: Violent crime, including armed robbery, homicide, and sexual assault, is a concern throughout the Dominican Republic. The development of a professional tourist police corps, institution of a 911 system in many parts of the country, and a concentration of resources in resort areas means these tend to be better policed than urban areas like Santo Domingo. The wide availability of weapons, the use and trade of illicit drugs, and a weak criminal justice system contribute to the high level of criminality on the broader scale.

So are Germany, Sweden, Italy, France, the UK and about 80 other countries. Tell me you don't travel much without telling me you don't travel much

Most parts of the world are very dangerous by comparison, and life is cheap.

Even in the safest part of the world, someone wandering off drunk at 4 am could drown.

"She and this person went for a swim and were caught by a big wave, the police report said."

National U.S. media coverage isn't going to help anything.

Don’t most people teach kids that the ocean is a wild place and only get in the water when it’s guarded.

Why didn't this person tell everyone what happened?

Right! If they died then that should be a story also. If they lived and they didn’t report it, that is suspicious.

If the other person was another college student why aren’t we hearing about that? If it was a local what was she doing by herself with them and why did her friends let her do that?

If you don’t like a post don’t engage with it

People knew about this Friday morning;

Did I read that right, she wasn’t alone? There was someone with her so I’m confused about the mystery of this.

That didn’t make sense to me either. If they were swimming and she disappeared it’s unlikely she was abducted.

Is the person with her a suspect?? Where is she??

New updates say she is presumed drowned and no one with her before the disappearance is currently considered a suspect. Poor kid drowned, at 5am on a beach. It’s sad, but likely not criminal.

I think part of the problem is the way our news media covers stories. They tell you very basic details to get you interested but not all of the relevant facts. This morning I was listening to the today show and they said authorities were working with the person who they believe is the last person she was with which is someone she was taking a walk with between 3 and 5 AM. He is supposed to be the last person she was with and they’re working to validate his story.

And to the person asking why people don’t know about the ocean. Do you think she was out for an early morning stroll at 3 AM? Hell no they’ve been up all night drinking and who knows what else. Judgment is clouded. I myself went skinny-dipping in the middle of the night in a foreign country in college and I’m lucky to be alive! What an idiot I was at 20 and drunk.

different eye roller
Does that help with anything especially right now. Try this: why not? DR is a place that MANY people go "for the direct flight, short distance from airport to residence, etc"

I don’t know why it doesn’t make sense to you. She randomly met someone with her friends. They were taking a walk together and they were hammered at 3-5 am. He may not clearly remember all of the details or may have been scared shitless when she drowned while they were swimming together. They’re working through to validate his story

The story makes zero sense as it is being told: So she goes swimming with someone, who presumably got back on the beach safe and alerted no one at any point?

They were probably both drunk and it was dark, so he may not have been at all clear on exactly what happened. Kids do dumb things. Poor girl and her family.
