Should schools be underwriting private education for the already privileged?

So middle class families who YOU think have privilege do not deserve any aid so should be locked out of private schools? Glad you aren't on the admissions committee of any of these schools! And how much privilege is too much? How do you determine this? Schools have their own priorities and want a diverse class to make it stronger. You are free to give or not give to a school requesting a donation. Did you send your kids to private school? They are filled with all types. You don't sound like a supportive friend.

NP. Yes that is what I am saying. This group of slightly UMC white children of Hill staff, ACLU lawyers and NYT reporters who went to Penn and Columbia is emphatically not who I want to subsidize with my meager discretionary income after I pay full freight. These are my literal peers, except with more children and a dramatically better work-life balance than I have

Sidwell and Sheridan of course can do what they want, but I’m not going to underwrite this

Wow. I think you are more offended that they have not chosen more lucrative careers with their education than you are about the financial aid. Lots of highly educated people choose to go into journalism or nonprofit work because it calls to them or they want to make the world a better place. Not everyone wants to be a greedy heartless, soulless person like you.

NP. And it's fine that they do. But that doesn't mean the PP, or I, should subsidize their private school education. I would like to do work that calls to me, too. But there are things that I want in life, including a private school education for my kids, that I wouldn't be able to afford if I did that. So, I took the more lucrative job that pays better - it's a trade-off that I made. I accept that. But they made trade-offs too - a job that pays less than they could otherwise make, but for more personal fulfillment. That's fine too. But you can't have your cake an eat it too, at least with my donation dollars.

nobody is making you “subsidize” their tuition genius. The school values those students attending and adjusts the price accordingly. if you’re bitter about wasting your life in BigLaw or IB, think about that instead. please do tell the school administration that you are on a donation strike because you resent that kids of academics and scientists and journalists get discounts 🤡

I am Hispanic in a private school, where the financial aid goes almost entirely to African American families and almost none to Hispanic families. Hispanics are a larger fraction of the us population and tend to have lower incomes than African Americans because they are many illegal immigrants. I find very unfair that the financial aid is race based. It should based exclusively on financial needs regardless of the race (if they are African American, Hispanics or Asians) .

I find that many private schools they think they are doing a good thing by helping affluent African Americans families.

What do you think?

I see you are using your snow day off of school productively. Question - are you thinking about a college major that will get you a lower paying, maybe prestige, profession like your parents? Or would you consider something that allows you to receive life's luxuries without groveling?

NP. Yes but there’s also a good portion of them who choose these types of jobs because they have less time requirements, more job flexibility and allow them to have more ‘work-life balance.’ I would love to have that too but I had to choose a job that would pay my daughter’s tuition bill. And I’m sure as h— not paying for their kid’s tuition as well. You can’t have your cake and eat it too.

You should have applied for FA.

New poster. But yes, some of us worked hard to raise our income or even had fewer kids so we could afford to educate them properly. It's aggravating to see similar families who just made more cavalier or less practical choices to benefit from my full pay money.

Sorry that these types of kids are in fact better than your kids. Bankers and big law kids are a dime a dozen. The school also wants the kids of scientists and journalists and people who have goals and priorities other than making every penny possible.

This is interesting! let's build on this. Can you elaborate why the Types of Kids produced by lightly UMC parents are better than the Types of Kids birthed by a lawyer? I'm mostly interested in the specific differences you see in your classmates.

MC and almost UMC kids are actually the dime a dozen population, and you'll find them in droves at the big public down the street from the $$ private.

Pretty sure they will still have their cake without your donation dollars.

This seems extremely cavalier and impractical since FA exists. Should have made better choices!

Maybe just restrict your annual giving or don't give at all? Or apply for FA yourself? There are so many problems in the world today, why is anyone giving themselves heartburn over who is full pay and who isn't?

These threads make me worry my middle class family is “too poor” for financial aid. I guess I will find out soon.

Why? If you’re genuinely middle class you will certainly get FA.

I am against race based financial
Aid. Many affluent upper middle class African American families receive aid in my kids private school. I believe poor families should be the ones receiving financial aid.

You don’t know the full details of anyone else’s financial situation. People make judgments on the dumbest things. I am a SAHM due to a health condition that knocks me out periodically. Total bed rest and hospital stays. In between episodes I can look okay.

Two close friends at the school know about it. No one else does. I drive a luxury car that’s 10 years old but looks new. Bought when I was working. I have some nice clothes. Bought when I was working. From the outside I bet I look flush.
