The gwenyth outfit is great. I would wear something just like that but with variation that works with me.

I own these wool pants from club Monaco, and on my petite frame, the ankle length hits at true ankle - so not too short for winter.

And I would wear with one of these blouses:

fwiw I'm a partner in biglaw and I wear stuff like this to professional social events where I am worried about looking good, professional, but also very accessible. Like a fun party we are hosting at a big conference.

I am a little more fashion forward - you say bonkers - but I have to tell you, in return fashion that:
1) the print in that blouse from VB is for spring and fall and I hang out of those, like boobs everywhere. So, not always appropriate.
2) those other shirts are sad. We can all do better.

Disagree. Those blouses are better than any other top that has been posted on here, other than the white one someone liked above. Take the gwenyth advice where she is wearing a plain turtleneck with classic pants. That's what those blouses are achieving too. OP is so worried about wearing something standout like combat boots or an ill-looking silk skirt that she's losing sight of what actually looks good .

You’re just sad if you think these corporate shirts look good. They don’t. GP would die.

Satin slip with combat boots and oversized sweater? Yes, that IS super fake and fashion victim-y. Conservative clothes? Never fake, my dear. It's what quiet wealth wears, and has worn forever. You can think it's boring, certainly. But it's the opposite of fake.

Most lawyers are nerds w/ no fashion sense as you must know since you said you are also a partner in a firm so you don't want to rock the boat too much particularly at a partners house where his spouse could be a little judgy

I love rails! I have some skirts from there. I think the issue is I must now pick a top look. The bottom is, although it is daring and not in keeping with the history of clothes, some kind of silk satin skirt and NOT a combat boot of any ilk.

Pair it with a lightweight sweater. Maybe tuck the front in a bit and accent with a gold chain belt. For shoes, pointy flats in metallic or an animal print.

FWIW my young friends have told me we must stop tucking.

Feel free to ignore them. Tucking often works for specific outfits and body types. Ruling it out altogether would be unwise.

This. I don't know what the PP is harping on about "conservative" and "corporate shirts". I don't think you know what quiet luxury looks like. And I promise you, the image you want to project at a partner event is quiet luxury.

Also, the gwenyth all white look and the above post of white pants with fine silk top would look like exceptional on a young woman. Dowdy on a matronly old lady. But OP is young.

I wore this exact uniform as a young associate 20 years ago. I don’t want to wear it now on a weekend!

I don’t really think the satin skirt is fashion victim? Vince and VB have one. I think it’s pretty mainstream?

Op, I just went to a similar thing as the significant other of a partner at one of the big firms and wore this. Felt on point compared to everyone else and I got several compliments.

Nobody suggested an oversized sweater. No clue what you’re harping on about. And it’s not “fake” if it’s what I would normally wear to dinner. What would be fake would be donning a scarf and trousers. The outfits I suggested are certainly not radical.

I don’t think it matters what you wear as long as it’s clean, appropriate (not too exposing), and you feel good in it. Most dc lawyers are not fashionable or don’t care about clothes.

Think something like this----wide leg trousers (or a trouser skirt, perhaps), a fitted top, nice belt and shoes, tasteful jewelry, maybe a cropped jacket or cardigan to layer if needed. Not necessarily this color scheme, but winter white never hurts. I'm not a Gwyneth fan in general, but she's pretty good with outfits that are appropriate in multiple settings.

Agree! This is similar to what a PP wisely recommended: sweater-trousers-booties-done. And OP already has the winter white sweater.

As for Chanel combat boots, a slimmer style would work better with the black sweater-slip dress:

OP I think you should wear the two piece dress that you linked. It's beautiful and perfect for the occasion (if I wasn't in credit card debt I would buy one myself!). I would style it with boots similar to the ones on the model.

OP is going to a partner's dinner as a spouse in a private home, probably of a senior partner. She doesn't want to wear these boots to this. Out with friends on Saturday, yes, and I agree they're are great. But anyone who is trying to help their spouse at a spouse's private dinner event needs to dress to help, not draw attention to their Let's go out and party outfit.

Okay, thank you. That’s where I’m leaning although I’m now having so much self doubt! It looks kind of weird with booties or pumps so I’m nervous re the shoes. Idk. It’s also supposed to snow on Saturday!
