Think something like this----wide leg trousers (or a trouser skirt, perhaps), a fitted top, nice belt and shoes, tasteful jewelry, maybe a cropped jacket or cardigan to layer if needed. Not necessarily this color scheme, but winter white never hurts. I'm not a Gwyneth fan in general, but she's pretty good with outfits that are appropriate in multiple settings.

She is always amazing. I would look just massive in this. Turtlenecks are v bad for the busty and I think this is too much white. Idk now I am torn asunder! You all have made this impossible for me! Ha

Use it as a guide. You can change the colors, swap the turtleneck for a silky blouse. Just think polished while still being comfortable. Tailored pants with some flow to the legs are a great starting point.

I have many silky blouses and trousers etc etc as I’ve been a partner for a long time, but I specifically wanted some kind of more casual but still appropriate look for this dinner. I’ve been swayed by all those images of sweaters and sequin skirts.

Oh please no sequins. Go with a satiny fabric if you want shine.

Yes, that is what I did, thank you. I wore sequins for the holidays. It was very appropriate although there were no twee scarves or sweaters over shoulders.

Fellow busty gal here, so I understand your concern with Gwyneth's turtleneck. The trousers with a tucked in V neck, button up blouse, or cardigan with good jewelry (i.e., one statement - either a necklace, earrings, or a stack of bracelets - and simple everywhere else) would be really pretty. I like these:

I also really like this blouse and it is styled nicely with the silk skirt you own:

Ditto on the jewelry comment above.

To clarify, I intended to wear booties with the beige outfit of a suitably fancy type.
The combat boots were with the long dress and sweater, much as it is styled in pictures.

DP, but combat boots with anything to a firm dinner is a really bad idea.

Thank you so much for your wisdom. I have been chastised forever.

Wasn't trying to chastise forever. I was reading thread backwards. And you're being a good sport about it all. I commend you!

i bought one of the jennykayen slip skirts and was disappointed with the fabric - OP check out Rails if you haven't who have some cool things that are more casual than worky but nice fabric. Most lawyers are nerds w/ no fashion sense as you must know since you said you are also a partner in a firm so you don't want to rock the boat too much particularly at a partners house where his spouse could be a little judgy

Gwyneth PP here, and I approve of that blouse.

I get that you're busty, as well, but I wouldn't wear a V neck to a firm dinner.

I love rails! I have some skirts from there. I think the issue is I must now pick a top look. The bottom is, although it is daring and not in keeping with the history of clothes, some kind of silk satin skirt and NOT a combat boot of any ilk.

OP you are bonkers to even suggest the boots or jeans.

The gwenyth outfit is great. I would wear something just like that but with variation that works with me.

I own these wool pants from club Monaco, and on my petite frame, the ankle length hits at true ankle - so not too short for winter.

And I would wear with one of these blouses:

fwiw I'm a partner in biglaw and I wear stuff like this to professional social events where I am worried about looking good, professional, but also very accessible. Like a fun party we are hosting at a big conference.

Pair it with a lightweight sweater. Maybe tuck the front in a bit and accent with a gold chain belt. For shoes, pointy flats in metallic or an animal print.

I am a little more fashion forward - you say bonkers - but I have to tell you, in return fashion that:
1) the print in that blouse from VB is for spring and fall and I hang out of those, like boobs everywhere. So, not always appropriate.
2) those other shirts are sad. We can all do better.

Disagree. Those blouses are better than any other top that has been posted on here, other than the white one someone liked above. Take the gwenyth advice where she is wearing a plain turtleneck with classic pants. That's what those blouses are achieving too. OP is so worried about wearing something standout like combat boots or an ill-looking silk skirt that she's losing sight of what actually looks good .

Untucking only works when you are a size 0 with no breasts. As a size 0 with medium breasts, even I look terrible with untucking.

And yes, I think 98% of teens and 20s look terrible all the time.

I'm one of the more stodgy PPs and I agree these options would be terrible for OP. And she's not trying to look like a partner, just a respectfully dressed spouse. And she's probably young. Why look like she's 50? There is a middle ground people.
