What school(s) were the reach? What was the safety? Curious

UMDCP is only a tough admit for certain subjects.

Posts like this were helpful to me last year in finding ideas to bring to our kid’s attention. So I’ll add ours in case they’re helpful to others. Obviously the categories depend on the acceptance history of your child’s HS, and clearly my kid only considered urban/quasi-urban locations.

Reach: UChicago, Columbia, Penn
Target: Michigan, NYU, Boston U
Safety: Toronto, Pitt, Minnesota

You'll have to come back and let us know how this goes, especially for BU. I thought BU was a target for my kid too last year. He ended up being accepted at 3 T10s and WL at BU

Safety: BU (PWO), Gettysburg (offer)
Reach: Cornell, Amherst, Bowdoin, UPenn

DS is in touch with coaches at all 4 schools and from Cornell heard that he will have a spot on the team if he clears admissions.

Safety: Elon, Dickinson

Interesting. I thought W&M and Dickinson had similar acceptance rates around 35%.

That's super cool. Good luck!

Interesting. I thought W&M and Dickinson had similar acceptance rates around 35%.

WF: 1450 (50% submitting scores)
W&M: 1470 (60% submitting scores)
Tulane: 1450 (45% submitting scores)
BU: 1450 (40% submitting scores)
BC: 1470 (50% submitting scores)

Dickinson: 1360 (25% submitting scores)
Pepperdine: 1360 (21% submitting scores)

Seems like Dickinson is closer to Pepperdine in terms of stats and could be easier to get into.

Dickinson is basically “test blind.” They stopped requiring scores before the pandemic, and unlike most schools, list test scores as “considered” in the CDS. William and Mary lists them as “very important” in their CDS.

And both are resoundingly boring and basic

Isn’t Harvey Mudd insanely difficult to graduate from? Did that make you nervous?

I’d love to know more about your kid. Mine has similar interests. Can you share how much merit he was offered at each of the schools? What do you think about his app got such great results? And finally, how does he like Harvey Mudd?

We have heard so, but DS was looking at Caltech anyway, so we knew that Harvey Mudd is equally harder, if not lesser. When he visited both Caltech and Harvey Mudd, I'd say he fell in love with Harvey Mudd more. When you hear people say that Harvey Mudd pulls kids towards it, that is actually true.

We love Harvey Mudd, but the only thing holding DD back is the campus. She likes Pomona and Scripps a lot more
