So you had a couple of months right. It's not wrong....you are the parent if you don't like what the school is offering make other arrangements. If you need somewhere safe for your kids to be for a couple of hours-schools are offering that. Schools can not be the answer to every one of your needs as a parent-they gave you time to prepare. |
Fairfax had half days in the 2000’s. My eldest DC had half day in 2005 and he wasn’t the last year. Yes, your point still stands about no one currently in FCPS had half days, but it wasn’t as long ago as you implied. |
Keep blaming teachers and schools for all of your issues and the shortage and educational value will continue to decline. See how that works both ways. Loudon did not ask they were bombarded with responses from teachers and parents on their original plan. They adjusted and now they are just days off. Should FCPS do that? Then you will complain about too many days off. Schools can't do it all-parents fought and begged their favorite GOP governor to help them get better instruction in schools. Well it's here and it's mandatory that teachers get the training. Figure out day care or advocate for better teacher pay so they can do it over the summer. Parents do not run the schools-I know that hurts your entitlement but it's true. If you don't like that private schools or homeschooling are also options. |
So 19 years ago your kid had half days. And you knew when he was enrolled that those half days existed. Now parents who enrolled their kids for 2024-25 found out after all the deadlines had passed for private school applications, after people had let go other childcare options, that oh— FCPS doesn’t actually want to do seven more days of instruction. Your experience is fundamentally different than what people are going through now. This “parents are inherently to blame” attitude was already old, now it’s embarrassing. This is why people support voucher programs— parents deserve better and so do kids. |
Not one single word blaming a teacher but nice try. I blame the FCPS administration. And yes, Loudon asked parents, that’s why they went to full days off, and only three of them. Most people can make three days off work with enough notice. Seven half days? Anyone working shifts will lose the full day because hospitals don’t staff nurses with “oh but FCPS is over at noon!” In mind. The world and Fairfax county is made up of more than just WFH. |

Some 2,000 parents responded online to to a request for feedback by the school division. Most opposed the delays.” A “request for feedback” means the school board asked and considered parents views. ACPS did the same, and also isn’t adding half days. It’s just FCPS that behaves like parents are all sitting home. |
You seem to have tons of time on your hands. Have fun with your articles

It didn’t say enrichment, just supervised activities …those are much different. |
| Listen people, you just need to get over it. Your whining isn't going to change anything. |
Make wise choices when it’s time for school board elections. Ask candidates what they plan to do to support parents. Listen carefully to the answers. |
**oh and opt your kid out of all standardized testing for which it’s an option. They’re already planning to extend this insanity “if learning improves” so if the parents of performing kids opt out, scores will continue to fall. |
What??? Schools are allowing any kid that has to stay the whole day to stay. So now you are comparing 3 days off that a parent has to find something for to zero days you have to find something for your kid unless you want to. |
Early release Mondays ended under Superintendent Dr. Garza. She was superintending from 2013-2016. Students were released 2 hours early, so they were in school for ~4 hours & 40 minutes. It was more than half a day. |

| I was in my child’s elementary school office waiting for a meeting and heard the admin assistant making calls to parents who had not replied to their survey about plans for the first two early release Mondays. The admin was making it very clear in her calls that the only thing being provided those afternoons was supervision and there would be no special programs or activities beyond that. At one point she said “I know the email last year said there would be programming but it’s clear at this point that’s not an option.” I don’t blame the school, this wasn’t their idea and the messaging last spring clearly made it seem that system was going to handle the logistics of this on behalf of the schools. |
