Has your ES announced any programs etc. for Early Release Mondays

Anonymous
The messaging left lots of room for improvement. But honestly, it's 21 hours over the course of the school year! The posters who are mad that the announcement was too late to do private school instead--sounds like you have the funding to put your kid in some kind of enrichment for those days. No one has to miss work to cover those days unless they choose to. Kids are going to be fine with 3 supervised unprogrammed hours.

The admin was making it very clear in her calls that the only thing being provided those afternoons was supervision and there would be no special programs or activities beyond that. At one point she said “I know the email last year said there would be programming but it’s clear at this point that’s not an option.” I don’t blame the school, this wasn’t their idea and the messaging last spring clearly made it seem that system was going to handle the logistics of this on behalf of the schools.

FYI - I'm a new substitute teacher in FCPS. On the app where we can sign up for jobs, there are some schools who have posted for positions for 3+ hour jobs starting around noon (different start/end times depending on the school's bell schedule) where the job says you're covering for early release supervision. Maybe I'm in for an awful assignment, but I decided to take one - I won't find out what I'm doing until I walk in the school that afternoon.

Our school has after school supervision with subs- kids will sit in the cafeteria and do Lexia, ST math, etc on their own. OR, parents can pay 45/kid/day to join an activity with an external activities provider who will be offering sports and games. Very much appreciate our PTA for arranging this alternative but $$ when you have multiple kids in ES.

Make wise choices when it’s time for school board elections. Ask candidates what they plan to do to support parents. Listen carefully to the answers.

The problem is that school board candidates lie. For almost all of them, the school board is a stepping stone to a political career, and they will tell you ANYTHING to get elected. On either side of the political spectrum.

How unfair to the children whose families can't afford the fun activities.

I marked that we didn't need the after school activity b/c DH and I can both work from home on Mondays, so I don't know what our school is offering because I haven't been on the communications.

What a drag to go all the way to sub for 3 hours total though. Seems barely worth anyone's time.

Go all the way?

DP, I’m a sub and I don’t mind taking jobs that are less than a full 7 hours, though I don’t take any that are listed for under 3 hours.

I'd be wondering what the behaviors in this situation will be like? Random kids all thrown in the cafeteria?:/

DP, I frequently take 1/2 day jobs. Sometimes the class is a nightmare and I don’t know until I get there. In that case, 3 hours is the preference.

I work from home, but marked that we need care for both of our kids those afternoons. After 1 1/2 years of working with kids in the house during COVID I am never doing that again. If my kids are home I'm not working...and I just don't have enough time off to cover.
I'm hoping that the kids will each find at least one person worth socializing with and that will be a better use of three hours than being on screens alone at home.

That’s what I’ve been saying!

But you could say this throughout the whole school year.

OMG it's a few hours! Just deal with it and let the kids play outside or read!
