Or maybe I can swing working from home that day.

Well honestly schools are not daycare.

Ours sent a poll if our child would need care or not, without any indication on what is planned if they stay.

FCPS should have been honest from the get go-these are half days/teacher training/planning. Teachers are drowning
with all the "new" curriculum, basals, and standards on top of all the behaviors of kids, parents, and admin. Give them these afternoons to train, plan, organize. Or pay them a lot more. These are the options. No one wants to babysit your kids on a half day and if your kid do stay get cozy with the idea that they will be on ST and Lexia while that teacher is working on her work. Free child care does not mean you get to dictate what this looks like. And pack them a snack for the afternoon because these are your children. How did all the parents and children survive the half days through the 90's-till whatever year they did away with half days. They survived and people are always saying the education was better back then...maybe because teachers were given true planning time. And by the way FCPS has given you a lot of time to plan for this....again these are your children.

Right, but the county seemed to indicate that since they added these to the calendar over the summer, they were going to provide free care. Now I'm sure they are realizing that they bit off more than they can chew.

Agreed it should have been stated that parents are responsible for their own kids on the half days.

Our school shared that kids needing care would be watched by school staff, not teachers. Also, the time would be spent on Lexia, ST Math, independent reading, MyOn.

First of all, FCPS said they would have in school enrichment options. So if your plan included taking FCPS seriously, you’re already screwed.

No one presently in elementary school in FCPS had half days from the 90s. Here in 2024 there is a cost of living crisis in this county and the vast majority of parents have these things called “jobs” that they are required to attend.

I hope local news covers this next to the latest data about how bad screen time is particularly for the 4-6 year olds. Then cut to how children in nearby counties are spending this time: in school. This is such an embarrassment.

If they had said that they would have had a riot and been forced to do what all the other local schools did— compress this into three regular days off attached to holidays. The only reason this didn’t create anarchy was because FCPS insisted this wasn’t going to impact families with childcare needs.

First of all you have kids. If you want me to take you seriously acknowledge that point. Parents want it all and have no idea what goes on in these schools. FCPS is not the best and has many issues but they did tell parents about this with lots of advance notice. Don't lecture me about the "crisis" go be a parent and if you need the free daycare then take what they give you-they don't have to entertain with sports camps and enrichment. Your kids will be taken care of but most likely on a computer. Get over it.

At this point it looks like FCPS is standing by their word but kids will be on computers and parents need to be ok with that.

They told parents with very little advanced notice (after school ended) and the announcement included the promise of in-school enrichment.

There is no way in which this isn’t an embarrassment to the district and the attempt to shift blame and responsibility for this into parents is wrong.

Right. I WFH so I can likely accommodate a few hours, but I was wanting to know what the enrichment was, as that is preferable to YouTube in the basement at home. I did get a flyer today about a 1 hour art class. I guess that's maybe the extent of it.

Attitudes like yours are how we get this:

Keep blaming parents for the districts bad choices. And it was a bad choice— no other area district did this; Loudon even asked parents what would work better for them and made adjustments. Why you think FCPS parents should tolerate something in which they were not consulted or prioritized is beyond me.

Also- I thought they said SACC would be involved or.. maybe I misunderstood. My child is in before care so I doubt would be included anyway but I haven't heard anything from them about plans for those signed up for SACC after care.
