This kind of exemplifies why this place is nuts. Until Monday, Usha could have been a frequent DCUM poster: DC lawyer mom with three small kids and a husband who seems pretty focused on his own career and seems to have evolved in a pretty negative way through the years. But suddenly this (mostly) normal person is getting all this criticism that she did not put enough makeup on to deal with the convention and TV lights? C'mon I have been clicking on some of your fashion links for years. Let me say I am skeptical that the vast majority of DCUM posters would have made better fashion choices in the same circumstances.

This place is nuts because the poster you quoted *checks notes* said she was fresh faced and that TV and stage lighting wouldn’t be as forgiving on them?

She was a regularish person on Monday. This place is nuts because you are criticizing her makeup on Wednesday night even though normal people don’t know how to put on makeup for the big lights. Look at all of you acting like you would have done it better.

You think he was just asked Monday afternoon? He was probably asked weeks ago. She had ample time to get a makeup artist and hairstylist. They are worth millions. The “I’m just a mom like you” act is just that, an act, so that you think her husband is harmless. Don’t fall for it.

Nah, put me in the camp that thinks Trump kept all those a** kissers stringing along until the last possible minute to feed his own ego.

Look for a month now I've been planning what I am wearing on a week long cruise. You think this lady can't buy a dress and get a haircut just in case her neckbeard fascist gets picked for the job he was the frontrunner for? Give me a break.

She doesn’t need plastic surgery. She is physically appealing enough. No one is saying she needs to look like a Fox News anchor. We are saying it’s extremely weird to show up on what is the most important day of your dh’s career looking unkempt. If people think your dress would be comfy for travel it’s not appropriate for what is essentially a work event for your dh.

+1 I guess at least it wasn't a pair of leggings and athletic bra!

I am shocked by JD Vance and don't agree with his politics but I think Usha did a very nice job under the circumstances for her first appearance on a stage of this size/scope with very short notice. Even if JD had been scheduled to speak for months I don't think she was tapped to have any speaking role until he was actually selected for the VP nom.

I liked that she did not give into the MAGA tradwife vibe, think she made a good fashion choice for the day of the convention she was actually speaking, spoke to what she loved about her husband without having to reveal her personal politics or really endorse his, and I'm sure her hair, makeup and styling will continue to evolve and improve as they continue on the campaign trail.

The OP of this very thread is looking for a dupe of her convention dress to wear on a long haul flight. It was a bad dress.

The other two were good. Her politics didn't get less loathesome when she put those on - the ones that photograph well. This one didn't work. Bad color, bad fit, weird choice.

I lol'd at this.

Same. And also, even if Trump kept stringing them along until the last minute, she had to have known JD was in the running. If I was a senator's wife and there was even a whiff of my dh being nominated for VP, I would be prepared to go to the convention with him.

And the blue dress was nice. It's not like she bought that at Von Maur in downtown Milwaukee that afternoon. She had that ready to go. Why didn't she have other outfits ready to go.

Like, come on. Nordstrom has people who will pick out outfits for you for free. Miss Priss here couldn't have schlepped over to Tyson's and said "Hey my dh might be named VP, I gotta have a few red and blue dresses for the convention"?

Any simple and sensible lawyer/young mum would consider a decent travel dress good enough for a campaign event lasting several hours. She isn't a socialite and wasn't getting ready for catwalk. There was an assassination attempt the week before on a rally.

She is an intelligent lady and simply doesn't need to look like a fashion doll.

But seriously - y'all are travelling in dresses like this?!

Travelling dress doesn't mean something you wear on a transatlantic flight, it's something you've with you for any formal thing like a conference, dinner etc. Its usually demure, dark solid color, wrinkle free, dry clean friendly and with simple figure defining lines.

That's literally exactly what it means. Idk where you're from but I would not describe something I could wear to a formal work conference or dinner as a "traveling dress."

Anonymous wrote:Sorry but I think it's really funny that her big convention debut dress is reading to DCUM as a travel dress

Go right from your spouse's first look in the spotlight to your overnight flight!

That’s the role they’ve assigned her. Not a fashion plate. Mom next door. Smart, not sexy.

That's not how the dress read. "Smart not sexy" would be to put her in something like one of the dresses Amy Coney Barrett wore to her (infuriating) confirmation hearings. This dress wasn't that.

I mean, she's following in the footsteps of Mrs. Pence. I think they want her to be there (it's a big draw that Vance is a "family man") but other than that they want her as inoffensive/negligible as possible.

Hardly. She was/is a high powered litigator at a top boutique law firm who had to give up her job much like Doug Emhoff had to give up his law partnership. I'm not a Vance fan by any stretch but let's compare her to Emhoff, not to Mother Pence (who did actually, to her credit, work while her husband was VP).

I’m surprised that she gave up her job. Why not take a 6 month leave of absence and THEN give up her job if circumstances support that? I think her outfits have been ok. She had to get on a stage and speak publicly not long after an assassination attempt was made on her husband’s new boss. I get that shopping might not have been her immediate priority. I hope she felt comfortable in what she chose to wear. I also think that as a woman of color with an elite education and a high powered job trying to appeal to a MAGA base, she chose a low-key, appropriate look that would be perceived by most as non-threatening. Her job, now, is to be an appealing spouse whose presence helps to humanize her husband.

She's beautiful in a natural way with a very fit body and she's accomplished and intelligent. You would be surprised how many men are attracted to that combination, so she isn't "look at me." Women waste a lot of time on procedures and hair extensions and preventative botox and all that blah-blah-blah thinking that makes you attractive.

Lets not forget she had three young kids.

Does anyone know the brand of the blue dress? It’s stunning
