You have had no discussion with them so you don't know it's futile. That said, discussion with you is futile so I shall exit the thread. |
So call in sick. If you're a data scientist, you're hard to replace. Personally, I'd be mad enough to jump ship as soon as I possibly could, probably without notice |
Team call in sick day before, day of, day after. Oops covid and a nasty gi thing. Bedridden the whole time.
This place deserves zero respect. And they won't fire you because they'd never find another person to walk all over like this. |
I did confront them and they would not budge, only after quitting did they relent. I'm a night shift nurse so hard to replace, and it was extremely easy to find a new position. Sounds like OP is hard to replace as well so power should be on her side. |
Funny, I never ask for permission. It's part of your benefits. As long as you plan it ahead of time, it should not be a problem. |
OP’s office rules are certainly draconian, but at every organization I’ve worked at, leave was at the discretion/approval of the manager. And at certain times you were not allowed to be off barring an emergency (eg in corporate accounting during the year end closing process). |
She works in data analytics (anti social career) and management should understand that about people who choose and excel in these career paths |
Stop. OP is a middle aged mom with a soon to be in college kid. She needs this job until she has another one. |
I wouldn’t mention the college tour at all I would just say it was a dr appointment and I would schedule one at 7 am on the same or next day if they need a note. Petty @sses |
Oh this is beyond stupid. They need 2 weeks notice but you are supposed to book your flight the day before? F That |
BUT OP's office wants 14 days of notice. OP didn't do that. Now she's here whining. Life is tough. |
This. Their two week rule is ridiculous. How do they handle it if you have a home emergency like a pipe leak and have to stay home to meet the plumber? Sorry, go without water for two weeks until you can take a day off? Start looking for a new job. I've never worked anywhere with these kind of rules. |
Op I left a place like this last year and my new job has been a breath of fresh air. The manager makes sure everyone uses all of our leave and doesn’t lose any. I feel almost guilty having a great and relaxed and understanding manager after having a serious of buttholes. I hope you find something new |

That’s what the wife does. |
How long have you been at this company? You said this is your first time requesting leave, so does this mean you started this job recently? You may still be in the probationary period and no leave allowed until it ends (ie 90 days).
Secondly, is this a remote job? If so, could you take your laptop and work phone and multitask during the college tour? There’s something more to this saga that you’re not telling us, what is it? Stop playing the victim. Are you currently on a PIP for anything? |
