College towns typically have bars and restaurants that don’t ask questions when it comes to fake IDs. They also have bars and restaurants that take a hardline and turn kids away at the door.

Kids figure out pretty quickly where they can go and where they must avoid.

Cops in college towns are typically pretty lax: they tend to confiscate the fake ID and give them a warning. Sometimes they issue a citation that leads to community service.

Here’s the PSA: kids get accustomed to easily using their fake ID since there aren’t real consequences in their college town…and they try to use them elsewhere like DC, Ocean City, a casino, etc. and there are real consequences because the cops aren’t lenient.

Talk to your kids about this.

PS - I know you think your snowflake would never have a fake ID, but trust me even the bookish kids have them. They are so easy to get online or through a trusted local source.

Went to college in the 80s. Do not know a single boy anyway that did not have a fake ID. Why are you all in an uproar?

Who is "allowing" your adult student's movements on and off campus?

Probably a military academy.

Kid will be a frshman in Aug. at a college rhat is half and hour away from home. I fantasize changing plans and have her stay at home instead. I know, I know…”but the college experience” 🤦🏻‍♀️
Ugh.😣

Welcome to college! My dd got one right before freshman year too along with her roommate and a bunch of kids who ordered in one big group. At their school, if you didn’t have a fake, you were kind of an outcast. She survived, is 21 now, and really doesn’t drink so it doesn’t mean your dd is going to become an alcoholic or something. It’s just a way to be social. I told her everything that could happen, but she seemed to know the tricks and that the bouncer would just turn her away if he didn’t believe her. Nothing I could do since I knew she’d just order another one.

Thxs, that what she told us, that she is using it to get into the social scene but not to get drunk. My mayor concern in not the alcohol as I do believe she will be able to have 1 drink only, but I worry about the consequences of getting caught and being charged with a misdemeanor.

All I’m suggesting is that you discuss this with your kid. Make sure you have visibility if there are any issues so you can handle it.

More directly: you don’t want to discover this on a grad school/bar exam/job security clearance check.

THIS!!!!

We hired an attorney when our daughter used hers at a store to buy a bottle of wine. Walked out the door of the store and an actual cop asked for her ID.

$1500 to sort out (must be the going rate) in a way that left no trace.

She had to pass a thorough check for the amazing job she took 12 months later. Phew. Money well spent.

Because it's illegal.
