PSA to parents of college kids

The law that raised the drinking age to 21 has been very rigorously evaluated, and it has saved the lives of thousands and thousands of kids.

Whether that is intuitive to you or not, it has been proven without a doubt.

???

I’m not the one arguing to lower the drinking age.

Rather, I’m trying to tell parents that even the straight-edge bookish kids have a fake ID…or will get one at college. And even if they are just using it to get inside a bar, they could end up with a citation, court date, etc.

Moreover: they could end up with something on their record without realizing it.

Don’t shoot the messenger.

ICYMI: there are some rather entrepreneurial kids at area private and public schools making money from selling them…and all the kids have them.

Okay.

That’s one bouncer at one bar.

The point is some places have cops waiting in the wings.

Sometimes the cops just show up en masse and essentially lock the building down so they can check everyone individually.

And sometimes they chase you down and arrest you if you try to walk away when the people in line ahead of you are getting busted.

Just talk to your kids. Or don’t.

My kid actually enjoyed their 4 hours of community service. It was a good lesson.

But I’m checking to make sure their record is clear 90 days after the last court date.

I know two families who had zero clue about their students’ issues until it came time to sit for the bar and for a government security clearance.

So, is it the possession of the fake ID that is getting kids in "more" trouble, or the fact they were caught underage in a bar?

I would imagine that if busted in a bar one would say they just managed to sneak past the door person vs. own up to possession of a fake ID.

Depends on the cop. Seriously.

Plus: if asked to produce ID by a cop, the fake one is usually visible/on top since they just used it to get in/buy beer.

So, was this bar raided by the cops?

Just trying to better understand the PSA...I gather this is not a bouncer calling the cops on you because you have a fake ID, but rather a planned raid by the cops...probably because the bar has some notoriety of allowing underage kids?

I was thinking that the bouncers at bars in Bethesda must wonder why there are so many out of state patrons over the Thanksgiving weekend and around Christmas!

Kids were busted at Caddies.

There’s no way to predict where and when it will happen.

My kid is a networker who makes friends wherever he goes. On more than one occasion bouncers or bartenders have given him a heads up to leave before 1am because they anticipated cops rolling in to check ids.

He’s been in line in various cities where it’s clear a plainclothes cop was standing by. That’s the cue to leave…and hope they don’t follow you down the street to do sobriety checks.

My kids and I cannot tolerate alcohol. We lack the necessary enzyme. This is quite common in people of Asian descent.

So, no. Not every kid drinks alcohol, does drugs or gets a fake ID.

But it’s still a valid PSA.

Never had a fake ID, older students would always buy alcohol for us.

It was when I was 18, for beer and wine.

And when we traveled to Florida for Spring Break, we could drink hard liquor, too!

Are you in your 60s?

Why do you ask?

It’s not about drinking. Most kids use the id just to get into the bars/restaurants where all the students are. It’s the nightlife in certain college towns. Plus: dance clubs.

PS - Tons of Asian kids are selling the fake ids.

Shall I start another PSA on kids traveling on weekends to go to clubs? Think: heading to NYC or Miami to go clubbing. Plenty of Asian kids there, btw.

Why is this a “PSA”? 😆

College towns typically have bars and restaurants that don’t ask questions when it comes to fake IDs. They also have bars and restaurants that take a hardline and turn kids away at the door.

Kids figure out pretty quickly where they can go and where they must avoid.

Cops in college towns are typically pretty lax: they tend to confiscate the fake ID and give them a warning. Sometimes they issue a citation that leads to community service.

Here’s the PSA: kids get accustomed to easily using their fake ID since there aren’t real consequences in their college town…and they try to use them elsewhere like DC, Ocean City, a casino, etc. and there are real consequences because the cops aren’t lenient.

Talk to your kids about this.

PS - I know you think your snowflake would never have a fake ID, but trust me even the bookish kids have them. They are so easy to get online or through a trusted local source.

Ok. So what?

Why are PSAs how you “shall” spend your time? This is so bizarre

I'm the PP on this. I appreciate you sharing this info. I wasn't trying to be snarky or say that I approve. I was just sharing a story. I will definitely talk to them, although at this point, I feel like I have little influence on what their ultimate decision will be.
