PSA to parents of college kids

All I’m suggesting is that you discuss this with your kid. Make sure you have visibility if there are any issues so you can handle it.

More directly: you don’t want to discover this on a grad school/bar exam/job security clearance check.

I think this is good advice, but quit insisting everyone has one, and we're duped if we say our kid doesn't. My kid doesn't. She is more of an old lady than I am! She works the granny chic, though.

Agree. They can smoke weed but not drink. Ridiculous.

Lower the drinking age to 18 so that kids can go hang out in bars legally.

No, because 18 year olds in HS will more easily buy alcohol for younger kids.

+1. I didn’t know anyone with a fake ID. We could just go to parties to drink.

How is attorney able to remove this?

I agree OP that the consequences can be huge. My child goes to school in Florida and it’s a felony there if you have a fake ID. I made sure they were well aware of that fact. Does it happen much in the college towns that they bust them? Nope but consistently a couple of kids get caught and have a FELONY on their record.

Fake ID rule #1…you lose the fake ID if the place gets raided. Throw it in the garbage, out the window, etc.

Just claim you snuck past the doorman in a big group.

This “rule” isn’t something new but it’s also not always going to work. My husband used to be a bouncer and they’d just keep them. If you’re caught at the door using it, then what do you do?

I was a bouncer too…was your husband a d**k? I would just hand it back, tell them it was fake and wouldn’t let them in.

Worst case you keep it and don’t let them in.

That’s the everyday “risk” with the fake ID.

Just another thing that “Christians” ruined in our country.

That’s typically what happens in a college town. Yes. No consequences. Which is why kids get comfortable using it…and try it someplace where the cops are hardcore.

Long story short: it’s $1,500 to hire an attorney in Philly to navigate these things.

Explain to your kids that every bar is like the east one in their college town.

Also explain that for many caterers (healthcare is a good example) having that on your record could prevent you from employment. Not worth the risk when you can just drink at parties on campus or nearby house parties. And no, none of my kids have/had one. But I’ve heard stories of their good friends who tried it and got caught. Was enough to scare kid into not getting one

+1. I was a total hermit in college. Never drank, never went to bars, would not have dreamed of having a fake ID.

Good post, though. Just don't presume that every kids is doing this. They're not.

I mean...it sounds like your college experience was awful and you were an extreme outlier. You were a total hermit?

Can we all agree that this post probably applies to many/most college kids (that either have a fake ID or are thinking about getting one).

Well…I just found out my kid got a fake one for $40. I am quite upset, feel disappointed and angry at the same time. Kid will be a frshman in Aug. at a college rhat is half and hour away from home. I fantasize changing plans and have her stay at home instead. I know, I know…”but the college experience” 🤦🏻‍♀️
Ugh.😣

I was an art major and had access to some sophisticated equipment that I used in my off time to make myself a fake ID. It worked great. But one day a couple of undercover state liquor board officials raided the establishment and asked me for my ID. I gave them my real ID and told them I snuck in, as noted. They were very serious and cited me for minor frequenting a tavern -- I'm sure that had I pulled my fake ID, it would have been some kind of felony instead of a misdemeanor.
