PSA to parents of college kids

I had a "fake ID" in college... Which was just an old ID of some other kid who "looked like me." Unfortunately I didn't really look like anyone else, including this kid, so if didn't work too well.

It was when I was 18, for beer and wine.

And when we traveled to Florida for Spring Break, we could drink hard liquor, too!

That’s typically what happens in a college town. Yes. No consequences. Which is why kids get comfortable using it…and try it someplace where the cops are hardcore.

Long story short: it’s $1,500 to hire an attorney in Philly to navigate these things.

Explain to your kids that every bar is like the east one in their college town.

You can get some really good ones on the internet these days. They look real. They just don't scan like a normal ID. DH's team at work has to identify fake ID's so I've learned a lot on the subject. And yes, my kids have them.

Philly? My kid has a fake ID in Philly and no problems. I mean, 99% of bars just hand it back and tell you they think it is fake...and 1% may confiscate it.

I guess your kid is the unluckiest kid on the planet to find some place that went through all this effort. Was the bar raided by State liquor police or something? That does happen on rare occasion.

Umm duh. I had one then too.

Yep, my kid and their friends all just got them as seniors as preparation for college. They are prepared not to drink and drive and otherwise be safe.

I do not care.

my DD and her new friends that she found through the early decision group me arranged a big order the summer before school started. My DS was more straight laced but even he got it the next year.

Actually some of them even do scan!! I couldn't believe the ones my DD and her friends got, and for not much money too.

Since nobody seems to care because you think they don’t issue citations (sometimes with court dates), think about this: if your kid handles the citation on their own (easy to do: pay and/or knock out the community service), they aren’t likely to understand that the item will appear in a background check…which is why you need to follow up to have it removed.

All I’m suggesting is that you discuss this with your kid. Make sure you have visibility if there are any issues so you can handle it.

More directly: you don’t want to discover this on a grad school/bar exam/job security clearance check.

They can scan—depending on what technology the bar is using.

FYI: casinos don’t play around.

They get them from China and pay with Bitcoin.

FTR: I’m not saying to try to crack down on them. You can’t.

I’m suggesting you have a conversation about the fact that many bars aren’t as lax as those in college towns, so don’t assume you can use the fake ID anywhere.

I’m also suggesting you tell your kid to let you know if they ever receive a written warning, citation, fine, court date, etc. Why? Primarily so you can make sure their record is clear.
