Gonzaga Waitlist -- odds?

Turned down a spot today. I really hope some folks get off the waitlist. So many talented and qualified young men on the waitlist.

May I ask where you are going instead?

NoVa public school. Lots of factors went into it.

Know at least 5 boys that declined offers. Very common in our school for boys to apply to GZ, Prep, And SJC. So they made other choices.

Good luck to everyone. Send the continued interest letter.

The deadline isn’t until Monday.

Realize this is an older thread from the spring, but bumping it so can get a sense of how many students were ultimately offered acceptance off the waitlist for the 2023-2024 school year. It sounds like the school had a record number of applicants last year and I am wondering if that trend is expected to continue or level off. DS is interested in applying.

My DS will also be applying and it's his far and away #1 choice. Let the application panic season begin

All I can offer is that the majority of offers from the waitlist that I am aware of, come within the first few weeks. However, I do know one student who got the offer in the summer. FWIW, I also know two kids who were accepted sophomore year.

Good luck!

DS initially was waitlisted, despite having almost all As and high HSPTs and being Catholic. It was his first choice and he was very disappointed. The waitlist letter gave the option of writing a letter expressing continued interest. DS did this and explained in a lot of detail why GZ continued to be his first choice. He was offered a spot a few weeks after initial decisions. He took it and attends now. He LOVES it and is doing really well.

We know two other boys with similar stats who also were offered spots from the waitlist. But, we also know a number of boys who were rejected outright or never got off the waitlist. Given that they’re filling such a big class and it starts in HS, I think there is more waitlist movement than say a k-12 that is filling maybe 40 spots total for HS. But, getting off the waitlist definitely is not a guarantee and admission is competitive.

Having Gonzaga as his “far and away #1 choice” has weight in the Admissions process. Make sure to make that clear in the Admissions process every chance you have. The high level of enthusiasm for the school is important to them. Indicating to them they are just one of the possible choices is not what they like (or even expect).

Checking the other boxes they look for also helps. The fewer boxes you check, the lower your odds.

This is not a typical result. Congrats.

A double-edged sword of sorts. Now we need to find $30k+ per year for the next four years or spend the rest of our lives wondering what if.

I am amazed that he was admitted, but if anything I’d wager it was due to having a solid history of character-building extra-curriculars and strong essays.

Gonzaga has been an amazing experience for our son. I know the tuition can be a burden but it's been worth it.

It is go good to hear your son’s experience has been a positive one. Do you have a sense of how the school is with financial aid? I’m afraid that will be the only way we can swing the cost of tuition if he should be admitted.

Same. My son hasn't even started the application yet.

We know several families who's received financial aid - 2 families are paying $5K a yr. You must ask if you feel like you need it. Caveat though, both were excellent athletes. Sports are serious stuff at the school and very very competive. We know boys who have left for other schools where they would play on Varsity but had no chance at Gonzaga.

My husband complains every now and again about the tuition (and the rise) but he knows and sees how happy and confident our son is in both academics and his sport. We only have one child and that took the bite out of the cost.
