Not great grades (3.5ish) or HSPT (60s)
Lapsed Catholic and public school student
Athlete

This is not a typical result. Congrats.

A double-edged sword of sorts. Now we need to find $30k+ per year for the next four years or spend the rest of our lives wondering what if.

I am amazed that he was admitted, but if anything I’d wager it was due to having a solid history of character-building extra-curriculars and strong essays.

don't believe you. but welcome

What's not to believe? That is the average profile of the students there. They have a 40% acceptance rate, we actually researched a lot.

NP. I do not think this is the average profile, but there are certainly B students/low HSPT boys attending if there is another hook (legacy/sibling, recruited athlete). They had big application numbers (I heard 700-800) so I don’t think 40% acceptance is correct this year.

They love athletes. I like the school a lot and have a kid there but this is one annoying thing about all the catholic high schools

I would add that the bar for athletes is lower but to get As is not easy so some of the student athletes don’t do as well academically

You just need to adjust your thinking about what is doing well academically. Lots of kids work hard and get Bs at Gonzaga. That is okay. It is not an easy school. I know at our local public school a B is considered a low grade and it is really easy to get all As if you are putting in a little effort. A lot harder at Gonzaga.

I’ve read 35% receive financial aid if there’s time to pursue that option.

Can anyone with sons at Gonzaga talk about the experience for a kid who is not sporty, or who's sports-curious but not an experienced player. Are there teams or clubs that might be welcoming to someone with little prior organized athletic experience?
Anonymous
We have friends whose DSs are not sporty and loved their experience. One was turkey nit interested in sports and the other loved a sport but wouldn't make a JV or V team. DH has a coworker whose son was very talented musically and who went onto music degree in college who also loved their experience.

Most of DS friends found a new sport- crew, rugby, wrestling, and water polo are some that many are playing now.

Absolutely. The Gonzaga website specifically addresses this. I think cross country, track & field and rugby, at least are no cut. Other sports will field freshmen teams. Plenty of boys are not sporty. And there’s lots of non sport activities. Have you been to an open house? Are the clubs and teams are there.

No. This is not the average profile. I am guessing some type of hook.

I have one who likes watching sports a lot and who loved being on the crew team. I have another who isn’t sporty at all and made friends through stage crew, robotics and clubs. He satisfied his PE credit with fencing but quit as soon as he could. Both boys have only amazing things to say about Gonzaga. Crew, cross country and rugby might be a match for your son. Good luck!

*all* the clubs and teams are there - so you can meet current members and ask questions

The GDA is a great group of kids...very welcoming and they get to socialize with girls from VISI, SR and others. Highly recommend your son explore that!
