The waitlist letter gave the option of writing a letter expressing continued interest. DS did this and explained in a lot of detail why GZ continued to be his first choice. He was offered a spot a few weeks after initial decisions. He took it and attends now. He LOVES it and is doing really well.

We know two other boys with similar stats who also were offered spots from the waitlist. But, we also know a number of boys who were rejected outright or never got off the waitlist. Given that they’re filling such a big class and it starts in HS, I think there is more waitlist movement than say a k-12 that is filling maybe 40 spots total for HS. But, getting off the waitlist definitely is not a guarantee and admission is competitive.

Did your kid attend Catholic school? Because everyone I know who applied from Catholic school got in,

Maintaining the student pipeline from the Catholic schools is a high priority. Especially since the re-emergence of St John’s as a viable alternative and a competitor. Also, the GZA admissions people learn to trust the formal and informal information they get from these schools on candidates.

This is not my experience.

Not everyone who applies from a Catholic school is offered admission. But all parishes seem to have at least one. And some have 4, 5, 6 or even more. There is some “spreading of wealth” amongst the parishes. If at least one boy from each parish attends, it continues to be a viable alternative for boys in the next year’s class.
