What’s going on at Travilah ES?

And there’s no “you people” there are just parents and staff who care and want to help. Apathy and toxic rage are not ok responses to the parents trying to help!!

How would you KNOW she had a chronic health condition unless she told you? Do you think people wear t-shirts saying, “I have a chronic condition”? Do you think she would trust these meddling nobodies with her personal business? You sound dumb. No wonder your kid’s scores are in the toilet. Apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.

FWIW my kid did just fine. But I also do my part as a parent - maybe that’s the difference between me and the whining parents.

You sound awful. I truly hope you aren’t a parent at this school. You are so bitter and ugly inside. I can just hear your nasal whining nasty voice in my head. The parents at this school are trying to help the principal and the staff for the kids. It does take a village. Please pause to consider it’s not all about you.

I’m sorry to the parents and teachers at Travilah. From what I have heard, it was once a great school.

I will say despite the rumors of staff unhappiness it really is still an amazing school, in as much as there are really any wonderful schools left in MCPS. Although we left before it got bad, our children had the best experience there and we were sorry to leave it!!! Middle school has its own issues.

Travilah is a non-FARM school, meaning our children must score significantly higher to compete with students from FARM elementary schools. Based on that standard, "fine" is not sufficient.

This is not AT ALL true. Exhibit number 2 why scores are low. Parents.

You guys are not trying to help her. This is a straight up witch hunt. What an awful parent community. I hope people house hunting find this thread and don’t move to the Travilah school cluster so your property values plummet and your Great Schools score tanks. That’s exactly what is going to happen.

Do you even know what has been happening at the school to label the parent community as awful? Are you okay with fifth graders scoring so low? Are you okay with your kids having different substitute teachers for months in two school years and spending a lot of time on screens? Are you okay with teachers leaving and being replaced by inexperienced ones, or with a teacher falling asleep during a parent's career day presentation? Are you okay with your kids being sent home when they are supposed to stay for after-school activities?

Okay you were probably boring. But a lot of the staffing is just post pandemic shuffling that has been happening everywhere. Every kid in every MCPS elementary school is on screens. I think a lot of housewives may have been allowed to have more of a presence when the old principal was there and are mad that no one wants them looming in the hallways spying on everyone.

It’s not a big deal that kids in MCPS elementary schools use screens, but it becomes a problem when different substitute teachers come in and don’t know where to continue from the last one, so they just give the kids screen time. I understand teachers need to move around, but it’s sad to see them leave because they were not happy.

Completely false.

There is much more screen at Travilah than at other MCPS schools. Even worse, the school consistently promotes a culture of "teaching to the test." Students suffer because the principal is laser focused on data and test scores and does little to foster a love of learning or a nuturing, supportive community.

There is obviously a troll in this thread trying to goad parents legitimately posting. Don’t take the bait.

To the Travilah parents — have you met with the principal’s supervisor? Have you filed a formal complaint against the principal to protest any decisions/actions you disagree with? (There is a form on how to do that on every MCPS school’s website.) I think you need to up the ante if you want change. And you need to organize together—they will not listen to just a few parents.

Thank you, PP. This is all sound advice.

This is funny because I think I’ve met 2 actual SAHMs in my years at Travilah. All
Parents work. It is a solid parent community of good people. Very few actual SAHMs. Plus how old are you that you call them housewives? That’s kind of an oldie term. And of the parents they run the spectrum- dentists, scientists, lawyers, doctors, corporate, government. The old principal left 5 years ago; there aren’t any parents left that really remember her and the complaints are about principal NOW. No one is hanging onto the past. Except this troll.
