What’s going on at Travilah ES?

Can someone give the facts without their opinion?

So everyone is complaining, principal does whatever they want instead of listening to staff, staff and teachers are quitting to avoid being labeled racist or sanctioned by the principal, and parents are divided because some see the principal as the issue and some are claiming the people complaining are just racist?

I don’t know who that principal is but I wouldn’t want to work for them either.

Facets have been stated. Teachers sent a letter to PTA years ago asking for help navigating hostile work environment. That’s a fact. Teachers and longtime staff quit in droves. That’s a fact. Principal is popular with parents and students and is able to do many things other schools cannot accomplish but also seems to rely on test scores and data too much. That’s what I have observed. Teachers who have left alleging hostile work conditions include people of color, not just allegedly racist whites. Situation seems ok but parent who knows teachers said their perception is still walking on eggshells and getting written up for everything - I wouldn’t dismiss their feelings because I value teachers so much. School seems to be doing fine otherwise and our children are extremely happy there but we hope the staff are happy too.

Teachers say ZERO help

So half the staff quits because of the principal and nobody has considered firing the principal?

Same thing happened in Lakewood and the principal is still there.

No. Central Office really does nothing helpful in MCPS.

You neglected the part where “Principal is popular with parents and students and is able to do many things other schools cannot accomplish”

How was the popularity measured? Do you have the results of a survey or something concrete to show this alleged popularity?

What exactly has principal done that other schools can’t accomplish? Are these accomplishments a direct result of the principal or of the community as a whole?

Why? Are you a parent at this school? A staff member who has bullied other staff members into leaving so you could be a toadie for MCPS? I stated the facts!! There are no lies! You don’t like it tough SHT. The teachers aren’t lying! And the principal doesn’t get fired bc she is a woman of color and has already claimed the race card what do you think she’ll do if she’s ousted???

She has done some small things that meant a lot re: having in person events during the pandemic, centering it on the children, in person K orientation this year (MCPS canceled it) and more. She also has a ton she doesn’t do that many other schools do. It’s a wash. Cold spring ES has a ton more amenities offerings and involved parents than Travilah, lots of things Travilah should have, and more. It’s not a big deal but I mean she’s dealt with some challenges creatively and this is an indicator she could have worked better with the staff than she did. There is ZERO racial tension between parents and kids, but some kids have behavioral issues and if that puts the parents against each other and they choose to make it racial then they suck. It’s not about lying or not lying, tons of parents know what is going on.

Travilah parent here, and I would not say the parents are happy. The principal is absolutely the problem. She came in with an agenda, and it doesn't involve supporting the needs of all students. If your child doesn't fit into her interest group, you'll get zero support. I can count on one hand the number of teachers who have stuck around since she started. Even teachers she has hired have left after a year or two. That shows how toxic the environment is.
