Shrug. Choices have consequences.

which choice - like the one where they decided to close Wednesday? or the choice to make plans for spring break? So people aren't supposed to make plans on the off chance there are too many snow days? not going to happen. and if they are open a day at spring break - i doubt they do much actual work. What a waste.

One thing I don't understand is who cares if the make up day is during spring break. The kids can skip the day. Anyone's kid ever miss a day or two because of sickness? I think so. Really, who cares if skip a day or two of these make up?

Not easy for high school students who want to get As

Why? Do any teachers really dock your grade that much for missing a single day of class?

my kids' As never related to attendance

They already burned through the snow days. There were only two and we used them this week.

So if there’s no school tomorrow they will make it up. They have identified which days already they will use for make ups. Some are teacher work days. Others are during spring break

They've identified which days they could use for makeups, but it'll take a while for them to decide which one(s) they will use. In 2022, they needed to make up three days due to January closures, but they didn't announce the plan until February 24th. The make up days used that year were in April and June.

And the April day was originally a teachers' grading and reporting day, but was changed to an early release day.

Again, this would be very bad. Other than 1/29, we have problems. Two of the makeup days are Muslim holidays. Another day is a Jewish holiday in the evening. A third day impacts Muslim teachers. Two days are spring break. The final day is the last option and at the end so can’t be done first.

Maybe we should restrict one holiday observance in school calendar per religious group. We’re not observing every religious holidays in other cultures.

Holidays like these are off due the number of teachers, staff, bus drivers and students who will be absent. It creates enough administrative problems that closing makes more sense.

These incompetent staff posted that we are closed 1/19, but the date of the message is from 1/17.

So, do you want Easter or Christmas off? I assume that weekends will rotate so that every faith gets their sabbath off, rather than privileging Christianity like we do now? Maybe have 6 day weeks and 2 day weekends, so the weekend moves throughout the week?

"Privileging" Christianity which has been and continues to be the religion of the vast majority of students. Give me a break. If I move to Saudi Arabia, are they going to rotate so that I get Sunday off?

It seems unnecessary to make this a code red. Why do they need to close child care programs? I know ours was prepared to open tomorrow.

Yes, just got text alert that MoCo is closed for tomorrow.

That doesn’t make it happen. If they don’t do 1/29, they will have a problem

Parents have travel plans. Teachers have travel plans. They won’t do this.

It shouldn’t be a surprise, it was very clear on the calendar.

So you just sit around not making plans on the off chance that some administrator will take away spring break days?

Exactly. This person has posted multiple times about how “irresponsible” it is to make plans in advance… during.. spring. break. No ones gonna make last minute plans on the offset there *might* be a makeup day. Absurd. They should just call Monday the 29th a half day and be done with it.

So guys- when the time comes to provide feedback on the next calendar year, PROVIDE IT. Point out the lack of built-in snow days and using spring break as potential make-up days. In reality, no one will care if your kid is not there for a make-up day during spring break. But it would really screw over the teachers.

have they ever taken away a spring break day before? don't they always get a waiver of some kind?

They are much more likely to add extra days in June than to take away days from spring break.

This is my family’s 11th consecutive year in MCPS. They have clawed back a day from spring break before — and that was back when MCPS’s written policy explicitly stated that if days had to be made up, they would be added at the end of the year. But we’ve also had days added to the end of the year before. In fact, they may have done both the same year. There was a year (maybe 2015-2016) when we had something like 5-7 days to make up and the state wouldn’t grant a waiver for that many.

I think every option available is on the table if we end up having the snowy winter that was predicted this fall.

Lucky us, it will be made up another day as the entitled parents and staff refuse virtual.
