If your college student plays D&D, you have failed as a parent

Anonymous
Neither my DH or I have ever been into it nor do our kids show any interest in anything like it. I would feel like I had failed as a parent if they turned out to be judgmental like you OP and some of the others on this thread.

You're absolutely right! Much better they drink and do drugs.

One who doesn't occupy an infantile dream world as a grown ass adult.

So no Libertarians. Good start!

No one really cares what you think.

How do you feel about adults follow football teams?

I think it's beyond weird when they expect other adults to converse with them about football as if it's the norm.

Well Tolkien made quite a feat of it.

All my adult children play this and similar games, and most of their spouses. They get together in large playing groups, scheduled around the calendar. They are aged 35 to 48, all are parents, professionals, one is a physician, with multiple degrees, and earn from 120k to about 450k.
What is it that you presume about this game or others that is crazy wrong? BTW, I don't play because it not my thing, but I am in my 60s and my contemporaries played this when we were in high school and college, some still do.

Someone needs to explain why anyone plays golf or watches golf games. D&D I get- but golf? Boring conspicuous consumption.

I’ve always thought anything related to fantasy or supernatural was kind of dumb, but it seems like a lot of nice smart successful people are into fantasy in the broad sense so I made my peace with it.

Why do you think fantasy or supernatural is dumb? Are you aware of the plethora of literature and cinema in this genre? Why is it ok to watch Game of Thrones, Outlander, etc., but playing a game is dumb?

I will never understand American culture. A multi billion dollar enterprise of college and professional sports- games, merchandise, thousand dollar seats, betting, team loyalty to players who are hired for millions of dollars is just fine but a fantasy board game is problematic?

Such an anti intellectual society.

No they didn't - I call BS on this rando "fact"
D&D is soooo lame - these kids are really lower GPA kids

Lol, this is hysterical. Are you a low IQ type, maybe? D and D, and many similar games appeal to high IQ types, in fact, most average or low IQ "types" wouldn't even be able to start this game- they wouldn't even get it. And it's not lame, it's managed to be a VERY popular pastime for decades.

Add to that sports which often cause lifelong debilitating injuries to the athletes who are some only children. We basically have not evolved beyond coliseum sacrifices.

I am not anti or for D&D, but there is no way there is an IQ correlation with those who play it. I know nerds always want to rationalize that even the cool kids can't stand them, at least they're smarter than them, when 9/10 times, they're not. Nerd doesn't automatically equal smart and cool/athletic doesn't always equal dumb.
