Private & Independent Schools
Obviously, the Sidwell Family has a lot of school spirit. Good for them! I wish the rest of us felt so favorably about our children's schools.

That's silly. If you see a sticker from a public elementary school, you think that is fine. But if you see a bumper sticker from a top private school, you assume that the family is bragging. Your post reeks of insecurity. Why should a private school family be any "less proud" of their DC's school than a public school family? Why should they have to stifle their joy?

This might have been one of my son's friends. Cut the kid a break, will 'ya? He's just being true to his school, not signifying anything. Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar. |
Oh, I see now that I'm not the PP you (and then I) thought you were addressing. I didn't post the mocking post. That was someone else. |
I wasn't cpomparing private-school stickers with public-school stickers. I was talking only about private-school stickers. |
Again, we're back to the question of *why* the bumper sticker. With the honor roll kid, it's unambigously because ... the kid made honor roll. With the elite private school sticker, it could be because the parents are boasting about their status and/or wealth (which is precisely why some here PPs are saying it's 'not done, even though obviously it is done). Or It could just be some kid who is proud of his private school. Less clear. |
You, and PP above, clearly missed the reason for my mirth. It was very simple. First, just one day after I posted that while I see X, Y, and Z school magnets/stickers quite frequently, I never see Sidwell stickers in my area of NW DC. Secondly, that when I looked down at the plate, it wasn't actually a car from my 'hood, it was from VA. Just two funny and odd coincidences. Especially since a VA poster had also said on this thread that s/he never saw any private school stickers in their hood. So, it was funny and made me laugh, but not at all maliciously. Oh, and I am extremely pleased and delighted with the private school my children attend, as evidenced by the magnet on the side of my vehicle. I certainly hope everyone is as happy with their child(ren)'s school as I am with my children's school. When I see someone with a school decal or magnet I assume they are. That is all it "says" to me, whether public or private. And, it should be noted that there are many of cars in NW DC with Janney magnets (I dont think I have seen Horace Mann or Key but they should make one), and a lot in Bethesda/Chevy Chase with Westbrook. I think those parents are quite pleased with their child(ren)'s school too.
I have seen cars with multiple school bumper stickers, decals and magnets all my life and in all areas of the country. The PPs who claim is "just isnt done" are obviously pretentious snots not from old established families because old established families are the ones who have alwasy done it. Come one, can't you all remember all the rambling old Country Squires of your youth that were just plastered with school decals??? 8) |
Agree with this. Put the sticker on your car, or not. But don't talk about how "people like us don't do that" because it's not on a level with forgetting to write a thank-you note. |
Oh, but is is on a level with not writing a thank-you note. It's bad manners. It's just not done (by the right kind of people). |
| Maybe it's the incessant talking about what makes a person "classy" is itself what's so déclassé about this thread.... |
You used the word "classy" first. Not a word ones uses if one has any class. |
You must have missed that I put "classy" in quotation marks? In other words, I'm talking about somebody *else's* preoccupations.... This thread is getting dumber by the minute.... |
| My DC is switching schools this year, and it has been a bit sad because DC is leaving best friends. We have tried to hype up the new school, and when the school sent a magnet with the school name on it, we proudly put it on our 1991 SUV. On the other hand, I would have loved to have a Janey, Lafayette or Murch sticker on our car, but alas, the lowest number we got was 132. When I got into college, my parents were proud because they gave up a lot to see that I got a great education. You just don't know why someone has a sticker on their car, and really, it is none of your business. |
Oh God, thank you. I needed a good laugh tonight. Your post is so ridiculous - thanks again!!!
ps: Do the right kind of people really post about themselves on DCUM? Maybe your child's school should stop making the magnets/bumper stickers if it's really attracting the wrong types of people. |
