Exactly! Same with ACK. What is up with this? I buy the community thing for schools, but there's no reason to announce to strangers where you vacation.

Does ACK = Acokeek?

ACK is the airport code for Nantucket.

Our kids are at Sidwell, and I see plenty of parents -- and older kids who drive themselves -- with Sidwell decals on their cars. I wouldn't read too much into this, though, either with re to Sidwell boosters or fans of any other school. Some folks are just more into that kind of thing than others. In our family, DH, older kids and I are not bumper sticker/decal types, but I wouldn't be surprised if our youngest, who's more rah-rah (utters the phrases "awesome" and "you're the best" frequently and sincerely) asked us to slap on a decal at some point. And, we'd probably do that because her motive would be school spirit, not bragging. In fact ,when you think about it, not putting a decal on your car because you consider it bragging is kind of pretentious -- like the old joke about the Harvard grad who says he went to school "in Cambridge". Other people usually aren't as impressed as you think they might be.

As for the car with multiple Sidwell stickers, just to give them the benefit of the doubt, I wonder if those are stickers for specific sports. So, maybe their kid(s) played several different sports and they got a sticker to support each team.

Anonymous wrote:Oh please! At least be honest here...after all it is anonymous. You love the fact that your child got into, and is currently attending XYZ school. You put those bumber stickers on as a badge of honor and pride. And guess what? There is nothing wrong with that. I am very proud of the fact that my child attends a wonderful school, and I do have the sticker on my car. When my child goes to college...I will have that bumper sticker on my car too.

While I am proud of the schools that my DCs, DH, and I attend or have attended, my family draws the line on putting bumper stickers on our cars. When the school is a top school, bragging just isn't done. Noblesse oblige.

You can't be all that well educated to use the phrase "noblesse oblige" in this context!

You can't be all that well educated if you cannot understand the phrase used in this context. Perhaps you are excessively literal in interpretation.

I see no problem with the school bumper stickers ... our family is pleased that our child attends his school and are not afraid to express that opinion. Same with colleges. The stickers I absolutely DETEST are the "My child is an honor student at ..." as in "My child is really smart and yours isn't!"

I once saw one that said "My child beats up your honor roll student" which was a bit red neck, but I understand the sentiment!

Is it possible to create a topic on this forum that is so innocuous that it doesn't devolve in to snarky, angry, jealous mean spirted comments? I really don't think so. What does that mean about the population of private schools here. Or is that the people who populate this forum skew towards being losers? Perusing this forum seems psychically unhealthy.

I never wanted a sticker on our car and thought I was superior for that...only to finally succumb when my kid got into that Ivy...now I realize how shallow I am.

A school bumper sticker brags, "My child got into [school name]." Isn't that the same as bragging, "My child is an honor student at [school name]"?

We could never have a school or college bumper sticker on our car. It just seems tacky to do.

When I see a schhol bumper sticker I think those people must be very proud. And pride is a sin.

My personal favorite: "My Golden Retriever is smarter than your honor roll student."

I hate those, too. But my son who got one stuck it on my car before I noticed. Then it seemed like I wouldn't be appreciating him if I took it off.

That said, it seems worse to me to have a bumper sticker proclaiming, "we are paying big $ to send our kid to school X, because we can afford it and because DC is so brilliant he got in."

(Full disclosure: when we did private, we had that bumper sticker too. Not my idea, but you can flame me now....)

I know I'm a hick--I thought the "MV" sticker was a shout-out to Montgomery Village.

My mom really liked putting college stickers on the car, and I have no problem with people who like to do it for their secondary school (as many note, it is often the kids who like it). I think folks take things a little too seriously on these boards more often than not.

I don't put expensive school stickers on our car because I don't want to get sued.
