Wake forest--not sure you could get whiter or preppier

My two cents: people pay a lot of money to wrap their snowflakes in a preppy bubble at WF. I think that’s weird.

That’s more a commentary on your circle than Wake. My left leaning daughter is very happy there.

It’s not a friends and family circle, pp.

My work provides a big network, and there’s a lot of interesting observations about affluent whites sending their kids south to affluent white bubbles.

I’m glad your kid is enjoying it.

But the thread is more about how odd some parents and students find a campus with a rich, white preppy vibe.

Ftr, I’m a bleeding heart liberal.

What an unbelievably racist post. You’re such a hypocrite, OP.

Actual pictures of Wake students on the insta account from this past Thursday. Op seems quite off base.

I understand what OP’s daughter means. It’s the type of white at WF that stands out, not the percentage. It’s country club, Tory Burch flats, blond highlights, mom and grammy were both debutantes, really rich southern white. Some of the other schools name checked in this chat are just as white when looking at percentages on paper, but the white students at those schools have pink hair and nose rings. This is neither a slam on WF or a credit to the other schools, btw - just an observation.
And I’ve known both very bright WF grads and boring, dim ones. YMMV.

I have a child at Wake and have yet to meet anyone who fits this stereotype.

And I have a family member there who fits this exactly.

And you are clearly jealous of that family

What? They are close family and I’m def not jealous, I love the kid but there’s no denying she fits the stereotype the pp mentioned.

It’s not an affluent white bubble, how quick you are to discount a third of the student body.

My son loves this scene so he was in heaven. My daughter was turned off. the wealth was crazy-so many designer purses and $300 sneakers on the moms on the tour and on girls walking around. My kids attend the Cathedral schools so we're no strangers to wealth or preppiness but this was next level. Am I missing something? We literally saw ONE south Asian girl the entire day and she was prepped out (or as my daughter said "white-washed"). Was everyone else hiding in their dorms?

Apparently you didn’t miss anything. Who takes note of the race, outerwear, and accessories of a roomful of people and then the students on campus. You sound next level.

I’m a POC and I took note of this on all our tours.

I’m not a POC, but I absolutely take note of the diversity of the student population of the campuses we tour. And this is because I went to wake in the 90s and realized after graduating how very white it was - As a 90s teen, it just wasn’t something I thought much about. I have since come to realize how very privileged I was on that campus, and I was actually one of the least well off students. I have had incredibly frank discussions in the past 20+ years with my friends from wake who were the few poc at the time and while they do not regret their college choice, their experience was quite different than mine.

Having grown up in nova and attended public schools, my children have had such an interesting and diverse group of friends from the beginning. And I hope for something similar at whatever college they choose.

Agreed. I always notice the clothing, accessories, etc of people around me. I think it's weird not too--or shows that you are really self absorbed.

I’m in Baltimore and now quite a few black students who attended or are currently attending Wake. They all love it. Interesting that op and a few others are so quick to erase their presence as if they don’t exist. Quite weird.

No comment on these op? Seems you must not actually be very observant as you didn’t get the student attire or diversity quite right.

Uh huh. Funny way of showing the “love.” I’ll bet their family makes more money than yours.
