opinions for CS - Wisconsin, UIUC, Purdue, Michigan, UNC or perhaps UVA

Only a coding camp graduate would say something like that.

UMD tied with CMU for silver. Go Terps!

UVA did pretty well. UIUC and Mich didn't place.

In addition, while UIUC general admission isn't terribly competitive, the CS major is very competitive.

DC would consider UMD, but he doesn't want to go to school <10 miles from home.
UMD is a good school, no doubt. But you are uninformed.

UVA offers a BA in CS, a BS in CS, and BS in Computer Engineering. Take your pick. Your classmates at UVA will be better than your classmates at UMD. Smart Virginia kids that can’t get into UVA or Virginia Tech go to UMD. The Maryland kids that can’t get into UMD do not enroll at UVA or VT.

UVA has a strong student body but CS there is meh. It's also a party school.

UMD is among the best CS departments in the county.

UUIC may be one of these schools like UVA that makes CS students study engineering. This is mostly unnecessary and just makes undergrad more painful. It's also in the middle of nowhere.

A lot has changed. It takes incredible stats to get in now, which is reflected in the amount of partying. only 30% are Greek. You can participate in clubs and debate societies and get into grad school without ever taking a drink or going into a Greek House.

Why? With the exception of CMU, Caltech, Stanford, MIT the privates are generally not as good for CS, especially if the undergrad wants research opportunities.

I understand the power of the brand name of a T20 private, but CS programs at typical T75 privates aren't as strong.
'

Research opportunities for undergrads at the huge state schools with 30K+ students?
You are better off at LACs if research is an important factor for you.

Research with whom? Most LACs don't have strong faculty in the CS department.

Mentored research project conducted with a faculty advisor. That is what LACs are often better at providing.

My DC from magnet had 4.9 GPA, 1580 SAT, 10+ AP, all 5s. Had something like 62 credits going into college.

CS major, cisgender, white male, zero hooks, - rejected at UIUC, and wait listed at Mich.

CS major is very very competitive even for high stats students. So, unless your DC is a DEI or has some other hook, some of those colleges will be a reach.

Having stated that, I would look at Vtech over UVA. My DC was considering VTech but UVA wasn't even on their radar.

Understood - DC in the same range; slightly lower SAT, but GPA 4.98 (weighted >4.8). White male, no hooks unless he tried to play D3 soccer.

Getting directly into CS at UIUC is incredibly hard OOS. I didn't mention UW, but OOS CS acceptance is <3%, so that's probably not happening.

Wisconsin and Purdue are possibilities (considered safeties in naviance FWIW).

I didn't mention McGill - thinking about that as well.

The naviance classification of safety, target, reach is notoriously off. It had every Ivy as a target for my child.

+1. Not kidding. Naviance is horrible. May provide some valuable insight as to stats of kids accepted/rejected, but as far as a predictor, FORGET. Hell, CollegeVine is a better "guesser".

My son is at Purdue studying CS and he is thankful every second for his admission. The CS admission culture is INSANE. I will spare you the details but his stats and credentials are nothing short of awe inspiring but the admission results for the class of 2027 in CS were humbling to say the least. For us it came down to:
VCU
GW
Purdue
INSANE!!!
He was WL at GT, Boulder, UVA, VT

I am not lying and not biased - he has stats that would blow your mind.

He is very happy at Purdue and the name recognition is amazing. It is also a direct admit program so he is a “guaranteed” CS major. This takes a ton of stress off of him; he just needs to do well in his courses and doesn’t have to worry about not getting his desired major next year. He also has NO issues getting the classes he needs since he is officially a CS major.

cs is so insanely competitive that you really can’t afford to be picky. Apply everywhere and go where you are fortunate enough to get in

same for my DS, except he's at UMD, direct admit to CS with merit. He had really high stats, but zero hooks. Thankfully, he's happy at umd.

Same situation here. UMD has exceeded all expectations. Did not look at Purdue but admissions for CS last year was truly insane.

Here too. FCPS WL at UVA and NEU. Direct admit to CS w/ some merit and Honors College. Having a blast. Unfortunately that means mom and dad never hear from him and has not been home since mid-August. 😢

UMD is much better than UVA for CS. That was a much better choice.

You can always go visit. Did you visit last weekend during family w/e?

We want last weekend and ate at the new Y dining hall. I was super impressed with it. DC went to another more top rated college to visit a friend and said their dining hall was no where near as good. DC is a foodie. I told my spouse we should go there for dinner on the weekend every so often (we live fairly close) because it's $18 per person for dinner if you didn't get a pass, and it's all you can eat.

BTW, in case you did not see this:

https://nac.icpc.global/

UMD CS placed second (tied with CMU) . Purdue tied for 3rd.

We did. Had a good time, weather was great and Terps won! Thanks.
