opinions for CS - Wisconsin, UIUC, Purdue, Michigan, UNC or perhaps UVA

Anonymous
On a pure rankings basis, for CS departments, UIUC is clearly at the top of the stack (out of the colleges in this post) but department rankings don't always track with undergrad education.

In addition, while UIUC general admission isn't terribly competitive, the CS major is very competitive.

DC would consider UMD, but he doesn't want to go to school <10 miles from home.

If you are going OOS anyways, pay little more and go to a private.

Yes.

All great to fine programs. Tough admits bit not Ivy-esque. Pick a couple (or all) that look right geographically and economically and apply. Good luck!

Why? With the exception of CMU, Caltech, Stanford, MIT the privates are generally not as good for CS, especially if the undergrad wants research opportunities.

I understand the power of the brand name of a T20 private, but CS programs at typical T75 privates aren't as strong.

Stats?
My DC from magnet had 4.9 GPA, 1580 SAT, 10+ AP, all 5s. Had something like 62 credits going into college.

CS major, cisgender, white male, zero hooks, - rejected at UIUC, and wait listed at Mich.

CS major is very very competitive even for high stats students. So, unless your DC is a DEI or has some other hook, some of those colleges will be a reach.

Having stated that, I would look at Vtech over UVA. My DC was considering VTech but UVA wasn't even on their radar.

Pay twice for inferior education in CS?

I would also look at U of Washington.

Get in first, and then we can discuss.

Check UVA OOS price.

Ironically enough, the two "weakest" (relatively speaking) programs, UNC and UVA, may be the toughest admits. Think Purdue may be the easiest and least expensive for OOS.

Understood - DC in the same range; slightly lower SAT, but GPA 4.98 (weighted >4.8). White male, no hooks unless he tried to play D3 soccer.

Getting directly into CS at UIUC is incredibly hard OOS. I didn't mention UW, but OOS CS acceptance is <3%, so that's probably not happening.

Wisconsin and Purdue are possibilities (considered safeties in naviance FWIW).

I didn't mention McGill - thinking about that as well.

FWIW, not on your list, but in the neighborhood, Ohio St., UMN and UMD all offerred merit to my kid last year. Not sure if any of yours, with the possible exception of Purdue, would do so.
