I’d accept an actual cold as a fact of life. I don’t accept as a fact of life COVID being given to my kid by some yahoo who declared “cold symptoms” and refused to test. You shouldn’t either.

The family stuff did happen around the same time and my kids have been home sick twice now. The Covid tests were nag but we waited for symptoms to go away. No fever. That’s what decent people do. Not send their kids to school sick. And there was one day of medical appointments.

I know you guys think that is the only way to get Covid is because some careless parent refused to test their kid, but please remember that positive folks are contagious before they even start symptoms. And some kids never show symptoms at all. So if you can't accept your kid getting Covid, you need to step up your own game. If you all wear masks diligently and make arrangements for lunch, the chance will go down a lot, and not just for Covid (we are the healthiest we've ever been).

The family stuff did happen around the same time and my kids have been home sick twice now. The Covid tests were nag but we waited for symptoms to go away. No fever. That’s what decent people do. Not send their kids to school sick. And there was one day of medical appointments.

Symptoms linger, so in almost all cases health guidelines do not say to isolate until all symptoms have fully resolved. exactly and why even the CDC says one can go back with the flu if fever free for 24 hours. Same with colds - no symptoms and kid feeling well = they go to school. We're not pandering to OCD hypochondriacs who keep their kids home from school, and thus deprive them of being in school for 1/4-1/2 of the school year, until ALL symptoms resolve for the common cold.

You could also say, "If you are so concerned about fires, make sure to install your own smoke alarms and sprinkler systems," and yet government laws and building codes require smoke alarms and sprinkler systems, even for people are not so concerned about fires.

OK keeping with your logic, government does not have laws that require you to wear masks when you have a cold. Or even the flu. Or even Covid.

Be warned that if you keep your own kids home for every cold, your kids are going to get flagged for poor attendance eventually. You'll want to document with doctors notes because staying home a week for a cold is not common practice and some will think you're lying to take your kids to Disney and such.

No one is flagging anyone for poor attendance. My kids have missed 8-9 days this school year for two colds, appointments and a family emergency. No one cared.

School has been in session for 17 days, so your kids have missed half the school year already because of the common cold. And it's not even late fall/winter. Yikes. At this point you're either a troll ,or if not, need serious help. Masking for common colds and keeping otherwise energetic kids with common cold symptoms home from school will never happen and is unrealistic.

I am not the PP you're responding to, but no, that's not what the PP said. Two colds, two appointments, and one family emergency, one day each, is already five days.

"Common colds" would be less common if people wore a mask in public when they're sick, but don't worry, nobody is going to make you wear a mask. You have complete freedom to go out and actively find people to sneeze on you, if that's what you want. Leave food out of the refrigerator, never wash your hands, drink water straight from the stream, rub dirt into your wounds, don't bother checking for ticks. Illnesses are a fact of life, you know! Like sunrise and sunset. There's nothing you can do to prevent them! Not one thing! In fact, it's even actually good for you to get sick, as frequently as possible!

Poster has stated that she keeps the children home with the common cold until all symptoms are gone which is an average of 7 days or so.

Your math doesn't work, unless the PP conveniently scheduled all of the appointments plus the family emergency to happen on the same day.

The family stuff did happen around the same time and my kids have been home sick twice now. The Covid tests were nag but we waited for symptoms to go away. No fever. That’s what decent people do. Not send their kids to school sick. And there was one day of medical appointments.

Decent people disregard health guidelines from experts? Because that's what you're describing. Symptoms linger, so in almost all cases health guidelines do not say to isolate until all symptoms have fully resolved. There's usually one or two symptoms to look for that are indicative of an active infection-- namely fevers-- and for everything else you just look for improving symptoms.

exactly and why even the CDC says one can go back with the flu if fever free for 24 hours. Same with colds - no symptoms and kid feeling well = they go to school. We're not pandering to OCD hypochondriacs who keep their kids home from school, and thus deprive them of being in school for 1/4-1/2 of the school year, until ALL symptoms resolve for the common cold.

CDC is not saying they can go back to school in 24 hours or with colds.

It’s cold season. So many kids are running around with coughs and sneezing and runny noses that don’t have Covid. Those kids should not be staying home for 7 to 10 days missing instruction. And now they need a doctors note after five days or they’ll be kicked out of school. Kids will allergies will be just fine. Obviously if your child has Covid or flu, stay home but their other bugs running around.

No one is masking their sick kids. Yes they have missed that much school. Mcps does not care and that’s the point. Nothing bad happened. Most kids are not energetic. They just have selfish parents who refuse to be inconvenienced by their kids.
