It is not what it is. It is what you choose it to be. Your choice to not wear a mask. And your choices affect people who are not you, because colds are infectious. Lead poisoning was also a part of life, until we decided to ban leaded gasoline and lead paint. |
common cold = lead paint Got it |
Respiratory syncytial virus (a "common cold") was also a part of life, until we finally developed a vaccine that looks like it might effective. |
Tell me where to get my cold vaccine and I’ll get it. Masks ain’t coming back. |
Obviously. Not because we can't. Not because they don't work. But because you and lots of other people don't want to. You can get your RSV vaccine at any drug store or grocery store pharmacy, if you're 60 or older. |
Our MS is full of hand sanitizer. Every classroom has a big bottle. |
My understanding is the RSV vaccine doesn’t prevent colds so people will still be catching colds. Even those vaccinated with the new RSV vaccine. |
More people might be willing to wear them if you and your ilk didn’t threaten to impose them on healthy children (and adults) at the slightest hint of a sniffle, or even in lieu of that… |
YOU are choosing public school with hundreds of germy families that you clearly despise. Own it. |
Who is me and my ilk? I don't have any power to impose anything on anybody, and I never have. |
DP. They do, though. There have always been more things that people *could* do to avoid colds, but that typically aren't considered worth it in an attempt to avoid colds. Masks, obviously, weren't invented for covid, but were not (and are not) commonly worn. Social distancing during peak cold season certainly isn't done, with holiday gatherings being quite popular. Most people wouldn't isolate from family members with colds, or even isolate themselves if they simply have mild symptoms. The pp that described this as a disagreement over whether masking should be considered a basic mitigation akin to handwashing or covering coughs/sneezes was correct. But the reality is, considering masking as such would be a huge deviation from historical practice and risk tolerance. |
Most kids in MCPS aren't covering their cough/sneezes nor hand washing. MCPS doesn't have enough sinks to even do hand washing before lunch. Lets be real. Nor do the desks and other surfaces get cleaned except if the classroom teacher does it. |
OK? That's even more reason to say masking would be incredibly out-of-line with what has been considered reasonable and practical measures for reducing illnesses. Most people accept that common illnesses are a basic, albeit unpleasant, part of life. |
Now you're even coming out against washing hands? |
School has been in session for 17 days, so your kids have missed half the school year already because of the common cold. And it's not even late fall/winter. Yikes. At this point you're either a troll ,or if not, need serious help. Masking for common colds and keeping otherwise energetic kids with common cold symptoms home from school will never happen and is unrealistic. |
