Agreed. And this is probably still a popular issue that helped people get elected last time. So they are stirring it up again du try ing this election season. |

So much pandering right before an election. Changing school names is their specialty; they’ve shown no competence whatsoever when it comes to the oversight of academics or basic operations.
And why isn’t Lake Braddock being renamed when it’s named after a soldier who fought against indigenous Native Americans. Shame on you, Rachna Sizemore-Heizer! |
Justice is a better name over some guy that no one ever heard of other than a school was named after him. That was an upgrade. The others less so. Time to go after Jefferson next. |
Justice sounds like a school for juvies. In fact, it is the name of a school for juvies. Google it. |
It’s generic. Schools get named “Freedom,” “Liberty,” and “Independence,” so why not “Justice”? The real issue is that Stuart HS was one of the best high schools in the county for about 20 years (1960s and 70s), and Justice HS will probably always be one of the worst. |
| There was just a Woodson PTO post on Facebook and it sounds like it could be named after Carter Woodson. He sounds like a good human and then not all the uniforms have to change |
Uniforms and Signage would still all need to change. Most things say WT Woodson |
I don't think a single uniform uses the WT. I just looked at the Cav sports Instagram and saw zero uniforms with it in the dozen or so teams on there. |
+1 Completely different guy http://www.culturaltourismdc.org/portal/web/portal%20/howard-d.-woodson-residence-african-american-heritage-trail |
Exactly. Just when I thought the renaming nonsense had reached it's apex and common sense was returning. I guess the SB still hasn't gotten the hint. |
Most things only say Woodson. |
Maybe because they wasted over $1,000,000 making the change, and countless school board hours arguing over it? Ordinarily, that would be a scandal worthy of calling for them all to resign. But, in Justice’s case, they wasted this time and money at the beginning of the Covid crisis, instead of focusing on the major issue: Covid and how to try to prevent learning loss. No surprise the learning loss was as bad as it was; the progressive school-board was completely checked-out on the issue for months. In 2023, they clearly have not learned anything from their mistakes. Time to replace them all. |
Stuart was renamed well before Covid. They renamed Lee during Covid. Renaming Woodson now is their woke booster shot. |
|
I found this on the Woodson page. The video is worth watching. I imagine it will disappear soon. Some interesting info and pictures. I knew Luther Jackson was the AA school, but I had no idea it opened so close to the Brown v Board decision. Fairfax really dragged its feet on desegregation. I support renaming the school and am glad they are tackling this.

He seems like many other Southerners of his era, yet also like someone who overall did more good than bad for FCPS, including it’s Black students. I wonder whether he came to regret his earlier segregationist views in the last 20 years of his life and see the error of those opinions.
But it matters not, because our current School Board - while woefully inept at managing today’s challenges - sees a lot of benefit in canceling those who aren’t as progressive as they see themselves. So we’ll soon get Carter G. Woodson HS, and the School Board will congratulate themselves for honoring a gay Black historian, but C.G. Woodson has no real connection to Fairfax County, and his achievements will largely be ignored if he becomes the school’s new namesake. |
