Woodson Renaming?

Yes, but when a family member reads graduates' diplomas to them, instead of the name of some guy they've never heard of and have no interest in, it can be the name of some different guy they've never heard of and have no interest in. This is the most vital civil rights issue of our time.

Who is carter woodson? And what is his connection to Virginia?

I always thought Lewis was a bad choice for Lee as he was not from Virginia. If they were going to name it after a prominent civil rights figure, fcps should have named it after the Loving family, historically significant Virginia civil rights leaders in a way that directly impacted many current fcps families.

Carter Woodson is the father of Black history and he was born in Virginia.

Thank you!

So he would be a local connection to Virginia.

"He served as Academic Dean of the West Virginia Collegiate Institute, now West Virginia State University, from 1920 to 1922.[27] By 1922, Woodson's experience of academic politics and intrigue had left him so disenchanted with university life that he vowed never to work in academia again."

The name change for the high school is an absurd waste of time and money, but I fully approve of Gatehouse getting renamed in his honor.

Fill me in on why this Supt wont last 4years.

Garza lasted 3 1/2 years.

Brabrand lasted 5 years.

Recent track records haven't been great.
. You may be right. I just counted 15 discrimination complaints against FCPS filed in 2023 that are under investigation by the US Dept of Education. That seems like a lot for one year.

I'd like to know what the W.T. Woodson community really wants.

The School Board points to students and community members who want the school renamed, but they state this as if it's a consensus whereas it may just be a few dozen activists pushing for a name change.

Show some transparency for a change, FCPS, and let people know what the community truly prefers.

This is just the first step. The next step is community engagement.

Yeah, that is just for show. The Board has already decided.

All renaming efforts are pointless.

The money could be better spent elsewhere.

Yeah, that is just for show. The Board has already decided.
That’s right. the people already voted for the board member - majority of who want a name change. If they didn’t want the school name changed they should have voted for people that didn’t want to change the names.

Why bother with the fake community engagement then?

Not sure this rises to the level of substantial issue for most people relative to many other things going on.

If the community and school board members are happy with that that’s great. But don’t call it “CG Woodson” since that’s the name of the high school in DC. It would be confusing for sports and academic events. That’s why JEB Stuart was not renamed Marshall since there’s already a Marshall up the road.

HD Woodson is the name of the high school in DC.
