I graduated 25 years ago. I'm not going to any college now or in the future. My kid can determine for themselves what caliber of student they'd like to be associated with, and they've made it very clear they don't want to be associated with upspeaking uh-ummers who don't know how to dress appropriately. |

Lots of reasons, better for major field of study, merit aid makes it more affordable, kid desires to live in a different part of the country for cultural reasons, etc.
May want to go to the same school as one of their parents. Locally, the kid might not be accepted into UVA, VT or W&M in VA or UMD in MD. Or as some have posted they might not find the state school a great fit. It happens. |
? acceptance rate <> prestige. SDSU is popular in state because it's cheap, in SD, easier to get into compared to most UCs. CA also has a lot more HSers than VA, so more people applying = lower rate of acceptance. Also, UVA acceptance rate is much lower than 38%. -CSU grad |
Well, sure - and is that not part of a good answer to the thread Q? |
| As a previous poster mentioned, for DC residents all we have is UDC and it isn't yet on par with most OOS flagships. My kids were offered scholarships to attend their public universities that brought the cost down to in state tuition. |
Right. He isn’t applying because he knows full well he ain’t getting in. |
Thanks for proving the tour guide wasn't an anomaly. |
Exactly, it's not complicated I'd much prefer a thread like "If DC chose an OOS Public University - what were the reasons for that" Could then learn about various OOS schools and get some insights from the thinking behind it. Half of this thread is pie throwing about UVA, which I learn nothing from. Such thread will have to wait probably - the limit for OOS discussion seems to have been met and then some. |
Some of us live in DC where every schools is an out of state public. |
| Didn’t get into UVA or W &M but wanted an equally high-achieving student body. |
THIS. Thank you. Spare me the “we want the out of state experience.” You get into one of these in state schools and you jump on them. |
DP. I’m not from this area so I’ve never heard of ODU before living here. I have no idea what the admittance rate is like. If we were in the area, we may have checked it out just as a data point. This past summer my DD did an intensive sports camp and we checked out a few colleges around the area without much prior knowledge. We were nearby and are trying to get a feel for what various types of campuses are like (city/rural, big/little, etc.). I still don’t even know any details about them or if my kid would apply to them. It’s very feasible that kids check out a variety of schools earlier in the process. |
The oppositional fanatics sure like drama. |
Right. Not everyone does that. |
