Why do people go to another state’s public university?

6. Family may live too far from state U, and kid wants to stay closer to home (eg, UMCP over VT).

Our state school is UMD. DC got in, liked it, but didn't want to be so close to home. Currently attends UCLA. It's worth every penny and we can afford it. There are a lot of great public universities out there and I think it's great for young people to experience a different geographic region.

Well, sure. But that’s UCLA over UMD. Who wouldn’t make that choice?

Some people are just oppositional.

Speaking of oppositional.

I mean, it’s true so it’s not oppositional.

Not everyone wants to go to UVA.
We are in Virginia and my senior won't even be applying to UVA. We visited over the summer and our experience was awful. Our visit to Old Dominion University last fall was actually an OUTSTANDING experience. Based on our two experiences I have no idea why UVA has a better reputation.

You are the reason people don’t like UVA

Whatever. You know I’m not wrong though.

You are wrong. DP.

Many, many kids want to have an OOS experience.

It’s not true. Seems like you are just trolling at this point.

All things being equal - Ann Arbor vs. College Park? Not even a question.

My DD does not want to stay in state. And I support that 100%.

Look, I’m sorry. Nobody with a chance at UVA admission also visits ODU. THAT’S why you’ve decided UVA is awful and ODU is outstanding. You’re fooling no one but yourself. Let’s not do this again, ok?

This posts makes it very clear the OP values private over public. That leaves very little room for fit or nuance and it really geared toward status or in-group thinking, rather than what an individual kid wants/needs/can afford (keeping in mind college isn't always necessarily the list price).

So...lots of reasons!

Yes, please try to stop trolling with your over-the-top parody of “UVA booster”.
