Anyone here opting their kids out of sex ed in Virginia?

They need to stick to science, not social issues with this one. Male = sperm maker, Female = egg mater; when they meet, you can have a fertilized egg that later becomes a baby that emerges from the female.

It's not a social issue to recognize LGBTQ. Sorry, that's biology. Thus, science. And furthermore, it recognizes and normalizes what the kids are already hearing and seeing in elementary and beyond. My kid had classmates with 2 moms in class as early as 4th grade, which is the first real FLE. So may as well teach it. Otherwise, you're just fostering ignorance and hate.

That's not science, 2 moms or dads is a social issues, doesn't make it wrong or right but science. If you think that LGBTQ is science than you can make that argument that countries like Iran where they don't agree is science as well?

Are you saying it's not a scientific fact that LQBTQ people exist? Did you know that in the animal world there are homosexual couplings? It's clearly something hardwired into the brain. That is science.

I don't care for the "sex assigned at birth" language for the younger grades.

Cute. But they'll hear it anyway. But if you wanna bury your head in the sand about it, the void will just be filled by others elsewhere.

NP. It only annoys me because it's factually incorrect. Your sex isn't assigned at birth, you are born a male or female. It's your GENDER that is assigned at birth based on your sex/genitalia.

Are you pulling your kids out of sex ed over evolving terminology?

What? Where are you getting that?

It was a question, not a statement.

Your kid will learn about puberty and that it's ok to have 2 moms. Relax.

Yes, I totally recognize that I'm an outlier in the group on this, but I just don't think elementary school kids need to be learning about all of the trans/non-binary stuff. In any event, we'll cover it when DD is bigger.

You’ll be covering it at the same age the other kids do in class because your kid will be hearing about it from their peers. And they’ll be getting crap info from their peers that you will have to correct.

What exactly is the point of the class then, if the take away is "crap info"?

Can you read? The crap information is going to come from their peers. Like a game of telephone.

It's also why kids, hearing anything for the first time, should be able to rely on their parents being willing to talk to them about stuff and make sure they understand what is accurate and not.

And isnt it funny that the people who opt out are the least likely to teach responsible, accurate sex ed?

Ignorance begets ignorance (and teen pregnancy).

I am more conservative than most in fcps and yes, also religious. But I won't be taking my kids out of sex ex. Rather I will be reviewing what they are taught and using it for discussion at home. I agree with most that I think the general gist is puberty but if there are things I don't agree with or feel weird about the language, I would still rather my kids hear it first hand and be on the same page as their peers, and we can talk about it seperately if need be.

This seems to be a 7 page thread with hand wringing over something that’s not even discussed.

In what grade are they “teaching” about non-binary and trans? Ask that question and “crickets”.

Manufactured issue. Standard tactic in GOP handbook. Elections are coming up.

OP probably isn’t even married or has kids. Or lives in VA.

I wonder what a teacher will say when a kid asks what a AMAB or AFAB means?

My child's elementary school did not have sex ed but I so wish they did. I got my period when I was in third grade. I didn't even know what it was the first time. I only asked my mom about it the second time because I got scared. It's so necessary to teach this kind of stuff to the kids when they are young.

What will teachers say when the kids ask why bigots want to oppress LGBTQ+ kids?

Anonymous wrote:Sex refers to “the different biological and physiological characteristics of males and females, such as reproductive organs, chromosomes, hormones, etc.” Gender refers to "the socially constructed characteristics of women and men – such as norms, roles and relationships of and between groups of women and men.

theremore man marrying man or woman marrying woman is a social thing, science is male vs female.

* observed sex traits at birth.

Which aren’t always accurate through pubert.

Assigned Male at Birth?

Who assigns this? Does that mean I can be assigned something else?
