I don't care for the "sex assigned at birth" language for the younger grades.

Cute. But they'll hear it anyway. But if you wanna bury your head in the sand about it, the void will just be filled by others elsewhere.

It isn't burying my head in the sand. It is me providing my kids with information, not the school.

What the hell difference does it make? You want to be the one to tell them "you will see these people in the world, but they are freaks and not normal." is that it?

FCPS can offer a gender social class, but sex ed or life science is not about socially acceptable norms

That sometimes things are binary? That we shouldn't hate people because of how the act in the bedroom (where you most likely are NOT present) or how they dress?

Your kid will learn about puberty and that it's ok to have 2 moms. Relax.

That’s not in the FCPS sex ed curriculum. And many people don’t think it’s ok to have 2 moms - it’s an anomaly.

Which people? Religious extremists?

Does OP think it’s ok?

So sick of this standard response. No not religious extremists. Normal people who grew up with a mom and dad and think it’s odd to have two moms or two dads. They aren’t going to say anything in front of the odd couple but will think it.

It's also "odd" to have a mom and a stepdad and a biological dad and a stepmom. But that happens. Or it's "odd" to have a dad and no mom because your mom died. But that also happens.

I personally think it's "odd" to judge other families as being "odd" because they are not the same as the majority of families. Actually I think it's more indicative of a cruel, small mindset. I teach my kids not to be like that. But would never say anything in front of you and recognize it's your right to pass along your odd values to your kids.

This might be on of the funnier things I've read on here. Oh, sweetie.

They need to stick to science, not social issues with this one. Male = sperm maker, Female = egg mater; when they meet, you can have a fertilized egg that later becomes a baby that emerges from the female.

It's not a social issue to recognize LGBTQ. Sorry, that's biology. Thus, science. And furthermore, it recognizes and normalizes what the kids are already hearing and seeing in elementary and beyond. My kid had classmates with 2 moms in class as early as 4th grade, which is the first real FLE. So may as well teach it. Otherwise, you're just fostering ignorance and hate.

That's not science, 2 moms or dads is a social issues, doesn't make it wrong or right but science. If you think that LGBTQ is science than you can make that argument that countries like Iran where they don't agree is science as well?

Nobody is listening to someone who can't use then/than correctly. Please don't bother saying it's a typo, we know perfectly well you're just not that smart.

That is grammar and has nothing to do w/ understanding science vs social which has nothing to do w/ reproductive. life science should not use social constructs like man woman, trans etc. it will be a male or female.

OK, cool so no objection to learning about same-sex families. Good to know. So WHAT is your objection to sex ed then? Are you one of those abstinence-only idiots?

Or you could tell your kids that you think that phrase is wrong and why and have a conversation about it. And allow your kid to learn all the other things the class will teach.

Perhaps that would be too difficult for you to do, to have a real discussion about such things with your kids?

feel free to look at the curriculum but its about male vs female how a baby is made, how to use a tampon.

Your husband and you have jointly decided to opt your children out from the FCPS FLE/Human Growth program, irregardless of what others around you do. Congratulations! Most couples are a divided house on so many issues.

The most accurate indicator to your inquiry would be the kids you know who DO participate in the FCPS FLE program. Are their attitudes and behaviors those that you would like your children to emulate when it comes to topics covered in the above mentioned programs? On the other hand, how about the ones who you know are opted-out?

Lastly, the controversies surrounding the FCPS FLE program are no longer related to what political affiliation you have, or how much you like (or not) Trump, but rather what is right and what is wrong, and where you stand in this ethical dilema. If you follow through with opting your kids out - even if they were the only ones in their class(es), you’ll be teaching them a very important lesson: In life, there are those who lead, no matter the cost; and there are those who follow others, irregardless of the price they have to pay for it.

NP. It only annoys me because it's factually incorrect. Your sex isn't assigned at birth, you are born a male or female. It's your GENDER that is assigned at birth based on your sex/genitalia.

Are you pulling your kids out of sex ed over evolving terminology?

You’ll be teaching them to be a bigot.

Which is all great and necessary. So I don't understand why anyone would be opting out.

Just curious how many others who feel like me are out there.

Bullshit.

Tell me exactly what in the curriculum you object to. You can review it.

One change would teach sex education in gender-combined classes in 4th to 8th grade where all students will receive instruction on the menstrual cycle unless they are opted out by parents, and boys would be referred to as “assigned males at birth” and girls would be referred to as “assigned females at birth.”

Ok. Your boy child should learn about menstration. What's the problem?
