The "White People Are Mosquitoes" Video in FCPS

I think the point of the video is to show that you don’t have to be a blatant racist or jerk to inflict pain on others. For instance, Telling someone with a disability that they are actually smart isn’t the same as blatantly discriminating against that person/or inflicting physical harm. But it still impacts the other person. As a POC, I actually think a lot of liberals engage in these sort of micro-aggressions. I think a lot of education on equity/diversity could be summed up with: examine your own biases and don’t make assumptions about people. I don’t see how the video is dehumanizing any one group bc anyone can be on the receiving end.

I would advise those who are bothered by mosquitos to get some bug repellant and move on.

Telling the mosquitos they are bad isn't going to get you anywhere.

Where’s the DDT?

Stop giving them ammunition them, you freaking moron. This video couldn't be more clownish, transparent, and stupid.

I didn’t make the video, dipsh1t.

There is nothing wrong calling out microaggressions. At least for people who aren’t racist pricks.

Funny you didn’t have an issue with the PP’s name calling.

I am full-on aggressive with racists.

I found the video patronizing and threatening, especially with the suggestion that minorities reasonably could engage in violence against white people who engage in "microaggressions." Mind you, I have no problem with teaching kids to be kind to one another, or to think about how their words, even if not ill-intentioned, might hurt other students. But this video is crass and heavy-handed, to put it mildly, and shit like this only proliferates because the likes of Dr. Reid and the current School Board think it's a good way to demonstrate their commitment to "equity."

I don't know if Lunquist-Arora plans to run for School Board or not (I wish she would), but the current School Board has done nothing but aggravate tensions within FCPS and preside over the school system's continued decline. They need to be sent packing this fall.

Literally nothing wrong with this video. In fact, very well done.

Older White Lady

Uh huh. It's offensive but you're too much of an addled tool to realize it.

It’s only offensive to people who enjoy being racist.

it would be better if they used a cracker instead of a mosquito

It certainly made me feel uncomfortable as a white person. I’m willing to examine my own discomfort and actually had a really great hr session a few years back on microagressions, so I feel like I’m on the side of whoever made this. THAT SAID, after reading through everything here, I wonder if the subtle point that mosquitoes are just doing what mosquitoes do is what is offensive and the source of the discomfort. I think it is actually quite divisive to outright say or imply that white people are racist and can never not be. That certainly leaves one feeling hopeless instead of feeling inspired the way I felt after a very well run educational experience on this subject.

But it’s not trying to say white people are mosquitos. It’s trying to explain that micro aggressions are like tiny mosquito bites. As an isolated bite, it’s no big deal but when you are getting bit constantly it can drive someone nuts.

I agree with the attempt but I don’t think the video was executed very well.

I agree with this assessment. I'm a white person who looks "exotic" and is constantly asked "Where are you REALLY from??" so I can empathize. But frankly, I'm sick to death of the lecturing about "microaggressions." And the narrator's voice was beyond annoying.

And yes at the end, the POC seem very annoyed by the micro-aggressions and hit the mosquitoes. Is that what you mean by saying the video implies minorities could engage in violence against white people? Because that is not what I got at all from this video. You know what is scary OP? How some conservatives are completely overreacting to CRT and the like. See Florida. I agree that we should focus on academics more than anything. But this fear mongering is scary. And the Federalist is biased AF OP. They are right wing and very much pro-school choice/not fond of public schools. But I am guessing you are already knew that, no?

There was also a flamethrower.

Yes. Do you think the video was saying, literally, take a flame thrower and kill white people? Because I thought it was hyperbole, showing a woman so sick of being bitten by mosquitoes that she felt LIKE taking a flame thrower to all of them buzzing around her. Somehow I was able to distinguish between this cartoon frustration and.... reality.

DP. I agree, however - let's not pretend that liberals wouldn't have blown that flame thrower out of all proportion had the video been directed at them. Absolutely no doubt they would be feigning outrage over the purported "violence" being depicted.

I don't see how it's productive to tell students they are entitled to "feel" like taking a flame thrower or a flyswatter to other people just because they've said microaggressions (and, of course, happen to be white).

There's a certain amount of paternalism involved in thinking some students deserve to be patronized this way, and others should just suck it up and accept that they are now the official bad guys, even at their public schools.

It's reasonable to assume that intent is coming from a good place.

This victim-Olympics + blame-whites is unhelpful and divisive. America is not skin color or who is offended, but if we don't celebrate who we are and what we're about, then what's even the point of being a country?

Why changed the rules now? It has worked very nicely for whites since Columbus landed.

Anonymous wrote:That is a fantastic video. I am not white and it sums up some of the things I have to hear all the time. And the teacher telling the kid to aim lower academically has happened to us. Ex. Teacher telling us maybe our 4th grader should aim higher than a CC because he seems really smart. He might actually be able to get into a 4 year college right away. So disheartened to hear. Both my husband and I have graduate degrees but in the teacher’s mind he is a poor brown kid and we are too dumb to know about colleges.

I know how you feel because the same thing happened to me. I was smart, but we lived under the poverty line and I couldn't participate in anything after school as I had to watch my younger siblings.

Yet, because I am white I don't bother telling my story because no one cares.

It sucks that happened to you. Imagine if that sort of thing happened to you almost daily - even today.
