The "White People Are Mosquitoes" Video in FCPS

I found the video patronizing and threatening, especially with the suggestion that minorities reasonably could engage in violence against white people who engage in "microaggressions." Mind you, I have no problem with teaching kids to be kind to one another, or to think about how their words, even if not ill-intentioned, might hurt other students. But this video is crass and heavy-handed, to put it mildly, and shit like this only proliferates because the likes of Dr. Reid and the current School Board think it's a good way to demonstrate their commitment to "equity."

I don't know if Lunquist-Arora plans to run for School Board or not (I wish she would), but the current School Board has done nothing but aggravate tensions within FCPS and preside over the school system's continued decline. They need to be sent packing this fall.

Literally nothing wrong with this video. In fact, very well done.

If people feel there is a problem and they want to help solve the problem then they need to do so in a way that moves society toward good and not evil, toward unity and not decision, toward understanding and not hatred. I am offended as a black woman by this. I call it out as racist trash that I do not want my children learning.

+1

What are people thinking with videos like this?

He's right about this. He did his best to try to fix the social studies curriculum. Good.

I mean, you wouldn't show a video that compared black people to bears. It doesn't matter how subtly.

Do you have any helpful comments about how America dehumanizes Black people though? If you’re going to go back to WWII for a reference, perhaps you should throw in contexts like noting that the time period when “the Nazis dehumanized the Jews”, the US military was racially segregated, many school systems and recreational facilities in the US were racially segregated, transportation, water fountains, stores, restaurants, and even where people could legally pee were racially segregated.

You do have an excellent point to make. I find it interesting that you chose to look to Europe rather than to the US — or even DC, MD, and VA — in your attempt to make it.

Kids can see thru this BS and are annoyed by it.

These videos are just as dumb to them as the "Just say no to drugs" video were to us when we were in HS.

Super cringey.

DP. Generally, the American public doesn't dehumanize Americans. There aren't a lot of examples from the recent or remote past. The military is a separate discussion.

This. Tell a group that they are the problem enough and they will react, just not in the way that you hope

Did you WATCH the video? Because it is not saying "white people" are doing this. It shows white people, women, gay people, also as recipients.

The only value of a white male to this crowd is if they are LBGTQ or in a wheelchair, or can be portrayed as an aggressor.

Well “rageposting on an anon message board trying to make himself look like a victim” certainly isn’t useful for anyone.

I think it's a great way to explain how the cumulative effect of certain well-intentioned comments based on our assumptions about certain groups can harm others. I don't know that it would be helpful for younger students, though.

Good examples might be:

"I mean, you got the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy. I mean, that's a storybook, man."

“Poor kids are just as bright and just as talented as white kids.”

"In Delaware, the largest growth of population is Indian Americans, moving from India. You cannot go to a 7-11 or a Dunkin' Donuts unless you have a slight Indian accent. I'm not joking."

I was going to say antisemitism is missing from the video. My white son was picked on because he's Jewish. What about when people say that Jews control the weather (DC council member) or when that Jewish man was beat up in a grocery store and those doing the beating were doing it for Kanye?

The MAGAs who constantly push faux outrage and sh1t all over our schools for political gain are mosquitos.

Where’s the DDT?

That impression says more about you than the video.

DP. Oh? Is there anything good about a White man in the video? At all?

Oh yes.

It's a 2 minute video that isn't about white people at all. I know you may view everything through that lens. But it wasn't about you or white people at all.

Right. It's about teaching POC people to recognize and get mad about micro-aggressions. It's not about white people at all.

This is shown to high school students? For the purpose of?

Did you see the part where white people were also subjected to micro aggressions? Bc the same are not just about race but about any disenfranchised group.
