Ex. Teacher telling us maybe our 4th grader should aim higher than a CC because he seems really smart. He might actually be able to get into a 4 year college right away. So disheartened to hear. Both my husband and I have graduate degrees but in the teacher’s mind he is a poor brown kid and we are too dumb to know about colleges.

I know how you feel because the same thing happened to me. I was smart, but we lived under the poverty line and I couldn't participate in anything after school as I had to watch my younger siblings.

Yet, because I am white I don't bother telling my story because no one cares.

It sucks that happened to you. Imagine if that sort of thing happened to you almost daily - even today.

You chose to come to the US.

I think my daugher is going to end up one of them, unfortunately.

My ancestors did choose to come here long ago.

I don’t face persistent microaggressions, but I recognize that other people do.

It's reasonable to assume that intent is coming from a good place.

This seems like the ultimate non-sequitur to me. FCPS has very few schools that aren’t now majority-minority and the “White” students often come from very diverse backgrounds, including the Middle East, Eastern Europe, and Russia. So why push videos like this unless it’s some flex to demonstrate that Whites can now be singled out at will for ridicule or demonization? It seems like it will incentivize some White families to leave for less hostile environments or could end up radicalizing some White students in ways that otherwise wouldn’t have occurred.

There are far kinder ways to teach kids to respect each other and their differences than what this video and similar tools are peddling. Hint: they don’t involve flamethrowers to torch your peers for micro-aggressions.

The video includes all kinds of microaggressions. It doesn’t single out white people.

Look, whites are a minority already. Shouldn't they get some protection?

No reasonable person watching that video would reach that conclusion.

Anonymous wrote:It certainly made me feel uncomfortable as a white person. I’m willing to examine my own discomfort and actually had a really great hr session a few years back on microagressions, so I feel like I’m on the side of whoever made this. THAT SAID, after reading through everything here, I wonder if the subtle point that mosquitoes are just doing what mosquitoes do is what is offensive and the source of the discomfort. I think it is actually quite divisive to outright say or imply that white people are racist and can never not be. That certainly leaves one feeling hopeless instead of feeling inspired the way I felt after a very well run educational experience on this subject.

This is a very astute and thoughtful observation.

None of you -who don't like- the racial make-up of our country --- that whites will soon be in the minority --- do any good complaining about it. You not liking it is not going to change anything.

People seem to be completely missing this point.

The point is that the video is NOT singling out white people as PP claims.

Just be conscious of what you say to others. It that really such a burden to some people?

Take off your red cap and go rewatch it.

It covers all sorts of microaggressions from various people.

I guess certain white people want to play victim about anything they can.

False.

And old, white men still hold a disproportionate amount of power.

I think it should have been more broad about generalizations and assumptions and lower expections of others. I do think this video particularly is anti-white or specifically calling out racism rather than generalizations.

False.

It gave many examples of other types of microaggressions. Gender, immigrants, disabilities, etc.
