Why doesn’t UVA admit more non-resident and international students?

I doubt there are many “bitter” OOS applicants. It’s not like UVA has strong prestige nationally.

I know this will offend but no one I knew in the Northeast ever mentioned UVA as a reach or safety. It just wasn’t on our radar at all.

It’s not offensive at all.

That’s anecdotal and meaningless. I’m from Westchester County, NY and people definitely knew UVA was a top school.

And my uva dd’s two best friends at school are from the Boston area. One had a 35 ACT and was a top student at her private (I know this because I helped her with her resume). In fact, most of her circle of friends are from out of state. But you’re right, no one outside VA knows about it.
Really doesn’t matter to anyone what anecdotes people pull out. Employers know and that’s all that matters.

Not offended at all but I’m from CT and my brother went to UVA. Yes it is well known nationally and actually has a very large New England contingent. Lots of appeal outside VA. To say otherwise is just your opinion, and everyone got one as they say.

+1 I went to UVA with a lot of very wealthy people from Greenwich, CT and NYC (who presumably could have gone lots of other places.)

Also, UVA had one of the best football teams in the country for a while in the early 90s and Ralph Sampson made UVA basketball famous in the early 80s. Even if you weren’t headed for the top schools, if you watched any sports in those years, you were aware of UVA and knew it was a good school.

Thirty years ago UVA was somewhat relevant in football. Thanks for the reminder.

Anonymous wrote:“UVA doesn’t have room to expand” isn’t very convincing. No reason they couldn’t have satellite campuses like many schools do, and run a shuttle bus to and from the main campus.

I have lived in Charlottesville and Ann Arbor and do wonder why UVA doesn’t seriously develop disparate campuses connected by a shuttle system. Michigan has a main/central campus but it also has extensive north and south campuses, and a west campus as well. These campuses are not one contiguous piece of land and are interspersed by commercial and residential parts of town.

UVA already did that with North Grounds and athletic facilities and some research areas.

So then why can’t it grow to accommodate more of the top students in the state?

I think the point is that the people saying no one new that UVA was a good school when they were teenagers living in another place have poor memories.

Antithetical to the spirit of the Academically Village.

In other words, UVA isn’t forward thinking…..

In this regard, they don’t have to be.

I think W&M should double in size instead and include an E school.
