Why does everyone always ask where your kids go to college??

Anonymous
nobody cares.
School is just a step.
What you are doing after that counts much more

Since college doesn't matter as everyone says, it should be a non issue when left vague. Unless you are fishing for info...

Exactly. Doesn't matter.
Why so reluctant to say. Weird

'cus you are fishing for info. If ivy, your mind will be wondering where you have gone wrong, whether the ivy kid is an URM, athlete, legacy, donor, or worse, a varsity blue. Let it rest.

you are so twisted

If you were an ivy parent, they'll be happy to tell you. If not, they want to avoid drama queens who feel they are entitled to know where everyone else is going. Let it rest.

You are so twisted. nothing dramatic about going to a college

So since every question is loaded, what CAN one ask?

Sadly, very little these days. No matter what you say or how you say it, there is a decent chance that someone will become upset or offended.

Don't ask college

just ask if their son is a gay

I’m not judging you on your child’s school or major OP, I’m just trying to be nice and find a connection.

Oh your child is at Oberlin? I grew up in NE Ohio - gosh that section of the turnpike in wester PA with no radio stations is the worst!

Oh your child is in Ann Arbor? My husband went there. I wonder if his favorite pizza place is still open.

Oh your child is at X school west of the Mississippi? How do they like it? It the distance difficult to manage?

Oh your child is studying journalism? My brother is a journalist, let me know if you want me to connect them.

This is a transient area and chances are high that someone you make idle chitchat with has a connection to the region, institution, or desired profession of your child. You never know what chance encounter could help your kid get an internship or just help you find a great place to eat when you visit them.

The drama is in your persistence. After first post, it was a natural curiosity After 3 or 4 more posts insisting there's no harm in revealing the name of college, it becomes stalking The parent is probably concerned about your mental state.

You may think it is self-effacing/humble, but it’s implicitly arrogant. It’s like you’re hiding that you belong to an elite club, then you’re outed. Obviously, there’s no reason to be embarrassed about attending such a school, so it seems like a humblebrag. And, if you think you’re protecting your conversationalist, you must assume they are fragile, which is also insulting and pretentious. If attending a great school is part of your life, just own it.

True, but it is bizarre how you always know someone went to Yale within ten minutes of meeting them. Idk what Yale puts in the water but it includes some sort of mandatory disclosure on the part of their students.

Not sure what's the big deal if someone doesn't want to give YOU the answer. Of course, you'll find out within 10 mins.
