FL had a boom during the pandemic, take a guess why. Take a guess why tax free red states like FL and TX had an influx of overtaxed citizens of NY and CA whose states had the strictest Covid restrictions and mandates and most radical social/equity justice reforms. This isn't even about republicans migrating or those who used to be democrats switching their political leaning. It's probably more about opportunism, finally saving on state taxes and RE prices (when you come from most expensive places in the USA) started to make sense with remote work, and unfavorable changes to QOL brought on by their states local Covid policies and going a bit too far to the left in other aspects had pushed them to make that move for greener pastures.

A huge factor was that FL had open schools during most of the pandemic. Florida man is smarter than often assumed

+1. Have any of you tried to get a child therapist in the DMV in the past year? It’s almost impossible. None take insurance. Huge waiting lists. The blue cities have set their kids back several years.

Yes, this definitely was a factor, anything that people hated in blue state and cities about Covid restrictions made FL a very attractive option if you don't want to live through this again.

We're not moving there but will snowbird four months a year when we retire in a couple years.
I'm not excited about the political climate but we'll get on our boat and be on the water with like minded friends while we're there.
There is no where else to go in the US where we can do this January-April. So, pick your poison.
We'll rent the first couple years and if it goes well, we'll buy.

I know another couple who moved down there, they didn't live in The Villages but they lived nearby and spent all of their time there. They twisted and turned in attempt to fit in. Some of the stuff they started saying and their newfound outlook on things was rather sad. I was so glad when they left.

buuuurn.

To be fair, FLA won't have those problems because it will be underwater.

Also, enjoy Hurricane season, dying manatees, algae blooms, invasive reptiles in your backyard, and condominiums sinking into the beaches. Yeah, FLA sounds great.

Yea, but PP said "buuuurn". So enjoy the burn, I guess.

My healthcare covers burns. So does the ACA.

FL did not expand medicaid so I guess low income people are SOL. But who cares about poor people. Rs sure don't.

Just bus them to DC

Your lack of self-awareness is funny.

There's more political homogeneity in the DC bubble than in The Villages, not to speak of FL at large.

Guess who's twisting and turning to fit in

You're an ostrich if you don't recognize that The Villages has its own version of "political correctness."

I know someone with kids in Florida schools, and she is very worried about the restrictions that DeSantis is passing.

My daughter goes to college in Florida. She wasn't registered for the primaries, but I told her to register to vote in Florida for the general election. The outcome there is more important than in our home state.

https://www.politico.com/states/florida/story/2021/09/09/child-covid-fatalities-nearly-double-in-florida-1390807

Child deaths more than doubled when the kids went back in 2021. Cold comfort for the parents of those kids who died. I think return to school would've been fine if Desantis also tried to overrule school districts mask requirement. Even in R leaning districts, they wanted kids to wear masks.

So, while I wanted my kids in school, the non-masking in FL would've concerned me.

^if Desantis *HADN"T* also tried overrule mask requirement in schools.

LOL, have you tried getting any therapist in the DMV in the past 20 years? Nothing has changed.

10 years ago it was difficult to find an adult therapist with openings, much less a child therapist.

I know a family who just moved there. Trumpers. And their kids bullied mine so happy to see the back of them on multiple counts.

um.. ok. Guess that depends on how you define 'healthy". Florida health systems aren't that great; childhood obesity is like 35%; infant mortality is fairly high; Desantis is meddling in education.

I guess they are better off than, say, LA, but not compared to placesl ike MD.

LOL! Who needs facts when you have conjecture?

https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/pressroom/sosmap/infant_mortality_rates/infant_mortality.htm --> FL Infant mortality is lower than Maryland's

https://stateofchildhoodobesity.org/children1017/ --> as is childhood obesity
