I’ve always known elderly retirees who move to FL. It’s been a thing for decades.

As crime continues to escalate and taxes continue to climb, people will look for other options. FL has gated communities.

those gated communities do not protect them from FL state laws.

I know wealthy Catholics who moved to Florida recently. I imagine they will need a lot of money to deal with climate change related flooding.

Nah, I moved to TX where they have a good work ethic and low cost of living. FL is a bunch of rich layabouts plus they hammer the UMC with massive property taxes and homeowners/flood premiums. Not a place I would choose on a fixed income either

We really didn't visit Florida that much in the past decade or so. Some trips to Miami, Key West, etc, but that's about it. During the Pandemic, we took a trip to Florida's east coast and really enjoyed our time there. Maybe something changed in Florida, maybe something changed in us, maybe a little of both. We really love the more European look of many of the homes, especially the ones with tile roofs. The homes can be very cookie-cutter, but at least they have a bit more style than most cookie-cutter homes in the DC area.

In any case, we bought into a community and it's now our vacation home that we go a few months out of the year. A lot of the people in the community are transplants from NY, Pennsylvania, Ohio, etc, but definitely not in the majority. So far people are not at all negative about the native Floridians. To the contrary, we exchange stories about how friendly they are - everyone is prone to greeting and chatting with strangers. I get called "hon", "sweetie", "honey", even though I am an Asian wearing a mask in an otherwise maskless store.

I don't agree 100% with Florida's politics, but it does align with our views a lot more. We are solidly Republican here in VA, but in FL, I feel like we are center-left. Most of the transplants we hang out with hold on to their liberal views and it shows that they are bit uneasy about that aspect of their life in FL, but yet they do all say that they love the actual people they meet every day.

Just sharing an anecdote.

Yup. Huge tax savings.

My brother and his wife moved to florida a few years ago, to save on taxes. They thought the would love the ocean proximity.

They actually hated it. Felt there was not much culture. It took them forever to get out. (The real estate market had crashed there--nothing like now. Selling their house really took more than a year I think.)

The only other people I know who just bought a house down there are snow birds. Both of these stories involve liberals.

I moved to Florida. I was born and raised there, and it was always my intention to go back after my child grew up. My market is a bit niche, and I don’t want to move to NYC or Beverly Hills. That leaves me Florida.

I can’t foresee myself switching to R, especially after Dobbs.

All the ones I know were conservatives republicans. Talked to one recently who moved to Miami. He hates it, too Spanish. Looking to move to Fort Lauderdale.

My sister said the people in FL are even more conservative than the folks she lives close to in Southwest OH. Yikes! Desantis has ruined FL for fair-minded people.

I know two retiree couples who moved back from Florida. Both said they didn't like it b/c it's full of strip malls and devoid of culture. Duh!

? what are you saying? That living in a gated community makes one immune to FL state laws?

We personally know dozens of people who've moved to Florida in the last 12 years. From new college grads to families to UMC and rich retirees.

After Florida we know a lot of people who moved to Texas, Arizona, Atlanta, and Charlotte in same time frame -- again, this was common before, during, and continues after Covid.

I find the references to culture to be laughable as if DC is so full of culture. Whenever people claim that some place "has no culture", I just take it to mean that it's not like where they came from. It reminds me of the Yellowstone scene between Kayce and Tate in front of the ice cream store, where they describe how the transplants move to their town and rebuild it to resemble the places that they decided to leave.
