Is your 5-11 year-old boosted before school starts?

Yes, my kids got their booster in June. So far they have not gotten covid since the pandemic started and have been doing camps without masks all summer.

With the extreme contagiousness of the new variants and the fact that very few are still masking, I'm not sure we can assume the mild cases of the past will continue. People are getting much higher viral loads--kids included.

I don’t know that you can make this correlation with any confidence. My kids got Covid a few weeks ago, they are vaxxed but not boosted, and 1 was completely asymptomatic and the other had a minor cough. We were on vacation and no one was masking. We actually never would have known the kids had Covid but for the fact that DH and I got Covid and were symptomatic so we tested the kids.

And my unvaccinated kids have been going maskless all summer. They also have not gotten Covid. They had Covid in the spring, so clearly their natural immunity has held up!

Are you in DC?

DCPS is mandating the Covid shot for all kids 12 and older. Likely, they will follow that with a booster mandate at a later date.

Also, plenty of colleges are mandating boosters for teens to return to campus, or even simply for high school kids to visit the school.

For example, NYU has a booster mandate for anyone 16+.

So blue areas? Voted blue and always do so please don’t attack me. This is crazy to force young people to get boosters. Very sad. My family and children won’t. If the new booster is found to be more effective then of course we would. That is not the case with the boosters available. Why is common sense lost right now.

Oh, absolutely blue areas. Not to get too far into politics, but it has definitely been places like DC / California / NYC where we have seen the more egregious vaccine and booster mandates for kids. Totally not based on science and complexity devoid of common sense.

No chance. Boosters are not working. That’s the facts.

Of course. We aren’t idiots.

+1. Why wouldn’t you?

Most kids (80-90%) of kids have had COVID already. That wasn’t the case when the vaccine first was available for them. I got my kids vaxxed but not boosting since we all had COVID in June. My kids are actually sicker than me but not any worse than they are with other illnesses they get. I haven’t seen a compelling reason to get my kids boosted when they already had COVID. I’m also very skeptical of cDC guidance when comparing it to other country’s approaches. We live our lives normally (yes including without masks) and don’t think about COVID much. It’s been a great summer and hoping school is 100% back to normal.

It sounds like covid is less than a cold for most kids. My kids went to sleepaway camp and tested negative for covid, but brought back s nasty cold thats dragged on for a week now- stuffy head, cough, runny nose, low fever, headache. I have it too, and it’s the pitts.

The CDC has made us all skeptical, and even more so when it comes to kids.

It took the CDC much too long to honor natural immunity.

Nope. My kid had a hypersensitivity reaction to his 2nd Pfizer so I’m not going to boost with mRNA ever. Probably won’t boost at all until there’s better data on it. We do flu shots every year and will continue with that and all other vax like HPV.
